The Wiki. I'll admit they haven't given him the most detailed history just yet, but he seems to have more assigned to him than most secondary characters get in this series.
personality: Burt Hummel is not a very complicated man in terms of personality- in fact, he doesn't really bother trying to be. With this guy, it's kind of a big platter of "what you see is what you get." And what you're getting is an average guy. He loves sports, cars, junk food and his son, Kurt.
He typically deals in bluntness when he's talking to somebody: Burt doesn't squirrel away his opinion on anything that he happens to have an opinion about, doesn't water down the truth to make things easier. Actually, he seems to be pretty adept at dishing out things that people don't really want to hear and doing it in a way that gets results. Truth holds a lot of value for him- he respects it, and while he understands that people are prone to making mistakes and lying, he still expects that same courtesy in return.
His general attitude towards life seems to be one of taking it as it comes and handling it in the same manner. Situations are greeted with a straight face and a realistic take on the matter at hand. He doesn't let people push him or his son around and he'll always do what's best for his family, no matter who he has to stand up to or who he might have to push away in the process.
And it may seem like a record on repeat to bring up his relationship with his son again, but being Kurt's dad- really being a dad to him- is one of his most defining characteristics. There is nothing Burt wouldn't do for Kurt: from playing through murder mystery dinners to occasionally downing organic food, even going so far as to threaten to take a flamethrower to the school on his behalf on one notable occasion. When Kurt came out to him, he admitted that he'd known it since his third birthday, when all he wanted was a pair of sensible heels. Yes, he's still working on coming to be completely comfortable with the fact, but it doesn't change the basics of what he said. Kurt's job is to be Kurt, and his job is to love him no matter what.
He thoroughly spoils Kurt in the material sense. Kurt owns any number of high-fashion designer brands, top of the line hair and skin-care products, and even got a shiny new car for his sixteenth birthday. Not that this has ever stopped him from calling bullshit and administering discipline where it was due. To that end, he's also fiercely protective of his boy. You don't insult him or cause him harm without expecting repercussions. Burt knows how things can be in the real world- how people can be prejudiced, because he used to be that kind of guy. After crossing that line, it would take a hell of a lot of work to get back into his good graces.
So, in short, Burt Hummel is a very normal man with a relatively normal life. While he can come off as unpleasant and oblivious, he's actually got a caring nature and is capable of being perceptive about other people. Messing with the people he cares about is a huge mistake, as well as underestimating him. As long as things stay civil, of course, you might just get along.
abilities: Burt doesn't have any supernatural abilities whatsoever. He really is just your normal, down-to-earth normal man in that respect. He does have skills in auto-repair, though- and while that wouldn't make him an instant master of other engine technology, it could probably be useful.
any plans for your character here? Burt's biggest priority is very likely going to be looking after that gaggle of teenagers from his home world, namely making sure his son is taken care of. After that, I think it's just going to be a go with the flow kind of situation. Watching him adjust to all the unusual happenings of the game just sounds fun.
possessions: The clothes on his back (one pair of jeans and a flannel shirt), a baseball cap (with no distinct logo), his wallet (containing the typical documents and cards of identification/insurance coverage, plus one credit card and about 200 cash dollars), and a cell phone that won't work properly when he tries to use it. He'll be very happy here.

Burt had always considered himself more or less a man's man; the kind of guy who took care of himself and looked after his own, no matter what happened. It was something he became proud of as time went by. It was supposed to be a standing quality.
Even with all reasoning about manliness set side, it was just habit.
So he wasn't the type of guy who did helpless. Maybe that was why everything about this place was so hard to get. Waking up in a place nothing like Lima, without so much as a spare packet of moist towelettes to indicate that Kurt was around, and no phone service to even call and check in. Burt studied his cell phone for the umpteenth time, a sharp frown reflected back at him from the screen, occasionally disturbed by the signal indicating a dying battery.
Every time it had come up in the first few hours (that single, bright pinging sound working against the seriousness of the situation) he dismissed it and went back to trying to put a call through. It hadn't worked and it wasn't about to start working, either. But he couldn't help trying a few more times.
Couldn't even get the time on this thing anymore- all he knew was that it was almost dark out. Kurt could be back home right now, worrying himself half to death because his dad was supposed to be home early and he wasn't, even though he always let him know when he would be late. By morning he'd be a nervous wreck, and Burt couldn't even make one damned call to let him know he wasn't hurt.
The phone pinged cheerfully at him again. It was probably gonna shut off soon: stupid thing never did hold a good charge once the warranty was up. They never did. When he got back- when, because he couldn't afford not to- he'd get a new one. A plan with better coverage, too.
Kurt had been bugging him about getting a better network for a couple of months, anyway. It made sense, now that he was in the middle of nowhere and couldn't rely on the thing to save his life.
...he'd make sure it was one with a good texting package. So he could kill two birds with one stone, maybe start making up for- for whatever it was that got him into this situation. As much as unlimited texting could make up for, anyway.
He tried dialing one more time; it didn't work.
With a few muttered curses, Burt Hummel pushed himself to his feet and got set to make a long walk. Sitting around wasn't going to solve anything, and it was time to admit to the fact. The sooner he got moving, the sooner he got back home.
