a worthy cause

On June 23, there will be international screenings of Serenity, with all proceeds going to Equality Now, a charity that helps fight for women's rights and works to end FGM (female genital mutilation).

There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That's me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That's a great deal harder, and that's Equality Now. It's not about politics; it's about basic human decency.

Obviously I would be the first in line, but I'll be in Paris during, so I'm trying to get as many people to go as I can. I've already talked to Mr. Booker, my dad, and several of you about this, but it is really important, and if nothing else a fantastic movie and opprotunity to have a lot of fun.

The Charlotte screening will be at Park Terrace, June 23 at 7:30 pm.
