In my time, in my world, there's a theory. Dark matter - invisible, intangible, noticeable only in its effect on visible matter - is drawn by gravity to the centre of the planets and stars it encounters. Particles of dark matter meet one another there and are annihilated on contact, generating heat.
Not enough to be noticeable on Earth, mind you. But thousands of light years away, at the centre of the galaxy? Dark matter exists at a high enough concentration that its accumulation within a planet's core could generate enough heat to maintain liquid water on the surface. Enough energy for life to thrive, for trillions of years, even on a planet torn from orbit and simply...drifting.
In theory.
It's not relevant, I don't suppose. Moving through the void of space, surviving the darkness thanks to the contribution of a power which we can only perceive by its influence...it simply keeps coming to mind, here.
[A pause.]
I never did the introductory song and dance, did I? My name's Alice. Alice Morgan. It's been a pleasure for....oh, almost a month. I suppose I really should have been getting out more by now.

Dr. Snape-Jones. I understand you're head of the Infirmary. Do you have clinic hours or is a 'come in when you're ill' arrangement?
