On Will and Skandar and their sexual roles.
This isn't really a rant, more of a general confused wondering.
I've noticed recently that most people in the Narnia fandom write Will as the top and Skandar as the bottom. Obviously this is the kind of thing that's open to interpretation and people can write it however they want, but...I just can't get my head round it. I mean, I can see Will topping -- in my head, they switch, although Skandar tops most of the time, hee -- but I can't see why that seems to be the general consensus.
Is it because Will's older? Bigger? Or what? I guess it's the kind of thing that's hard to explain, because I was just realising that I can't really explain why I see it the way I do. To me, Will is just...such a bottom. He just comes across that way. Like, he's kind of ~in charge~ of the group or whatever because he's the oldest, but when it comes to Skandar? I think he's totally whipped, for one thing.
I don't really know why I see Skandar as the top, either. I guess it has something to do with him (in my head) not being gay. I either see him as bisexual, or like, Will is the one guy he's attracted to even though he's generally straight. Whereas Will, to me, is completely 100% gay. (Which is why it's quite impressive I can write apparently convincing Will/Anna in my threesome fic, hahaha.)
Obviously I'm not saying that all gay guys are bottoms, because like...that would make no sense, but I mean that I think Skandar would feel all ~weird~ about the buttsex, unless he was topping, because he wouldn't see that as (much) weirder than having sex with a girl.
CLEARLY I have thought about this waaay too much, but it's something I focus on a lot in various fandoms, I think. A lot of the time I can read pairings either way, but this is one of the ones that just totally baffles me. Again, it's not that I think Will would NEVER TOP EVER OMG, I just find it strange that that seems to be the way most people write him.
Maybe it's just popping up a lot more now because newcomers to the fandom see that people generally write top!Will and bottom!Skandar, so they just go along with that without really thinking about it? Which, again, is no problem really. I don't want to come across sounding all whiny and like I think everyone should write them exactly as I see them. I guess it's just something that people haven't discussed, and I'm curious.
