MORE WEEDS.
I've been writing notes as I watch, sort of putting things under different headers, so I'll try to group stuff together. Not surprisingly, though, it is mostly just rambling with the occasional cap/gif/quote thrown in.
(Psst. Watch this show. Please. This season had Zooey Deschanel in it!)
First of all: Silas and Shane. Shane walks in on Silas having sex with Megan, and just stands there watching and grinning. SHANE. He is such a pervert from such a young age, it's so great. And then he's all "It was an accident! An AMAZING accident..." Also, Silas goes along to Shane's debate thing and claps enthusiastically for him even though he's awful, and then he gives him girl advice and it's just so cute. I feel like one of the few things Weeds has kinda dropped the ball on is their relationship, because there's a lot of potential there, but it feels like we see these brother moments once in a blue moon. They come after everyone's relationship with Nancy, which I guess makes sense in the theme of the show, but it kinda sucks.
Silas and Nancy's relationship is absolutely the most fascinating thing to me, though. I am sort of amazed at how their relationship always had the snarky quality it has now, because I never paid much attention to that and figured it was a recent development. But no! In the very first episode of season 2, he calls her Nancy! MIND BLOWN. Even way back then, he didn't want to think of her as his mother. And it's when Nancy's come home from fucking Peter, too, and so he's all "How was your sleepover, Nancy?" and then Megan comes in all half-naked and it's almost like he's shoving it in Nancy's face, like, look, I'm having sleepovers too.
I kind of like how Nancy seems to have this weird competitive thing going with Silas's girlfriends. I don't know if that's a normal Mom thing or not. I guess to some extent it is, feeling like another woman is taking your son away from you kind of thing. And from Silas's POV it's probably just rebellion, but because Silas and Nancy have a weird vibe, it makes it a little...well, weird. Like when she wants them to have a family dinner and she backs Silas up against the wall with the phone, trying to get him to cancel his plans with Megan. And he
drops the phone even though he KNOWS how mad she is, and she grabs him and shoves him down over the table. That was a thing.
ALSO THIS:
Silas: Why do you have a home pregnancy test?
Nancy: Do you want me to kill you?
Silas: I was just asking a question.
Nancy: I ask the questions. I'm the mother.
Silas: Okay.
Nancy: How did this happen?
Silas: You don't wanna hear it.
Nancy: Oh, but I really do.
Silas: If I had to bet on it, I'd say it was three weeks ago, in my room, doggystyle. When I pulled out, the condom was gone-Megan has really strong muscles, must've sucked the thing right off it, I didn't even-
Nancy: Ah! Ah! Ah! Stop, stop, stop!
Silas: You asked. Wanna be the cool Mom.
Nancy: No. No I don't. Million things in this world I wanna be, 'cool Mom' nowhere on that list.
Silas: Well, I hope 'Grandma' is on that list.
Btw: I forgot that I really disliked Silas when I first watched the show, because he's generally pretty amicable later on. HE POKED A HOLE IN A DEAF GIRL'S CONDOM SO THAT SHE COULDN'T GO TO COLLEGE. I mean, seriously. Though I've found that the actions of most of the people on this show are a lot more understandable once you apply the theory that everything they do, they do for Nancy. Not necessarily to make her happy, but for her attention, or for her help. I mean, also Silas thought he was in love and he was possessive etc etc, but I think deep down it was a way to get attention from his absent mother, by making somebody else a mother, you know?
Anyway. So then Megan's Dad kicks Silas out of the house and when Nancy shows up after being at a drug thing Silas is all "Where were you? Where have you been?" which was sort of incredibly sad. And I love how Nancy starts like beating on the guy and defending Silas, and also-Silas STABBED MEGAN'S DAD IN THE ARM? I had no memory of this. It's interesting that violent streaks kinda seem to run in the family.
Nancy banging on Silas's door and begging him to talk to her! ♥ And then playing instruments and singing Polly Wolly Doodle outside his room until Andy and Shane are like PLEASE STOP OH GOD. That was just-agh, all these little moments earlier on where she actually makes an effort. And he keeps calling her Nancy and asking her about business, and it's still a little bit bitchy but he says "Stop thinking of me like a kid, talk to me," which is interesting because, like...yeah, she sort of stops being his Mom, but he encourages it, you know?
And even way back then, he wanted to be her business partner. "I want us to do this together. I think we would...be good together." ♥ But I have to admit I did crack up at her being like "I WILL NEVER EVER EVER LET YOU GET INVOLVED IN WHAT I DO." Famous last words.
Oh, my god, and this:
Silas: I think not wanting to hear your Mom have sex with a narc is a good enough reason to stay out all night.
Shane: Nothing happened. Mom kicked him out after fifteen minutes.
Silas: Talk about the fastest gun in the west.
Nancy: Silas.
Shane: Shark week.
Nancy: Shane.
I love this because it's hilarious, but also because it's so perfect that Silas would leave the house to avoid hearing Nancy have sex, and Shane would probably listen through the wall and know exactly what went on. Like, even back then, this is how they operated.
ALSO IN THIS SEASON: NANCY BREAKS DOWN SILAS'S DOOR WITH AN AXE. And it turns out Silas has been stealing all the anti-drug stuff to protect her. And then Nancy stomps on the video proof to protect him right back. Love love love. Btw, this was the most dramatic season finale in the history of ever, right? And oh my god you just want to punch Silas in his perfect face but, it just shows how ridiculously desperate he is to get in on the business, like, the lengths he goes to.
I love that Shane ran and hid under the duvet on Nancy's bed after getting caught watching Silas have sex, because there's this theory I have about Shane and the way everything sexual revolves around family for him. Also, Andy takes him to get a handjob, which I mostly think of as AUGH OH GOD SO WRONG and then I focus on the Andy/Shane weirdness of that, but also I think that it's significant that his first sexual experience is with a much older woman.
Seriously though, the Andy/Shane weirdness of that. I mean, I know it's Andy, and he's super gross for the first few seasons and his moral compass is askew in ways that he doesn't even really get, but WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Also, his total joy when giving Shane the masturbation speech. Nancy tries it and is like a normal person about the whole thing, and then she asks Andy and he's like "I'm all over it!"
As well as Silas/Shane, the show lacks Andy/Silas. The kiss in season 6 was awesome (obviously) but it's weird because we rarely see them interact one-on-one. I did like how he told Silas to fake his way into college, and talked about doing the same thing himself, sitting in on lectures and having sex with girls there, because THAT IS WHAT SILAS DOES IN SEASON 6, and as always the continuity/foreshadowing in this show is awesomesauce. I also liked that scene where they were chillin' in the pool together, whining about how Nancy doesn't appreciate them.
My 'random' heading is, well, random, so bear with me. First of all, YAEL. YAEL WAS SO HOT. And hnng the scene where she has the hip flask in her stocking and he's all "I have to fuck you," that was inappropriately hot. I love the theme of Andy going for these dominant women, and also these slightly crazy women, because I think it all comes back to wanting Nancy, or at least goes some way to explain why he wants her the way he does. I feel like, as far as relationships go, this show doesn't do anything half-heartedly. They really make an effort to explain why these people do the things they do, and they don't beat you over the head with the explanation, which is nice.
But yeah, mainly: Yael fucked Andy in the ass with a strap-on. I loved you, Yael. One of my favourite things about Andy is his submissive nature, so their whole relationship was fun for me.
Look at him getting down on his knees for her, awww.
ZOOOOOOEY. It was super weird to watch Zooey's episodes again, 'cause they're the ones I started with, and it felt like I was seeing them from a whole new perspective, instead of "this is a show that Zooey is in" it was like "this is Weeds and Zooey is in it!" like, doubly awesome. I loved Kat so much, she was so crazy and awesome and hilarious. And I love that her craziness is similar to Nancy's in some ways, because Nancy hates her, and Andy and Shane are both kind of head-over-heels for her.
Heart hug! Yoga bemusement! Also the two of them dancing at the graduation party = adorable, and Gretchen's jealousy is hilarious. Idk they were just so cute. And just to make it inappropriate for a second, please tell me I'm not alone in wanting some older!Shane/Kat? Like, skipping ahead to the first episode of season 3 for a second-she says that thing about how they'll meet again and she thinks he's going to do some really interesting things with his facial hair. And in those lost years in Denmark, he had the crazy sideburns. Idk, idk.
I leave you with Shane and Silas's hilarious initial reactions to Kat. (A+ t-shirt, Silas!)
