I really think that this was my favourite Skins episode all season so far. I mean, 3x05 was awesome for the Cook/Freddie kiss, but the rest of it was just okay. Whereas this episode? I think I pretty much loved ALL OF IT.
Oh my god. Ohhhh my goddd. Okay, keep in mind I did only just see the episode, and I was kind of making mental notes during it but then things KEPT HAPPENING. So this entry might be a bit all over the place. AND ALSO LONG. I honestly have so much to say here, because I loved it so, so much.
Anthea's 'men = bastards' thing made me laugh, as did Effy trying to get her to pay attention to her, although that was also kind of sad. But still awesome. God, sometimes I forget how much I love Effy Stonem, and then she drops vases on the floor without so much of a bat of the eyelid, and then THROWS UP OUTSIDE SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE, TAKES HER SHOES OFF, AND WALKS HOME BAREFOOT. I realise these are weird reasons to love somebody, but they just...idk, they sort of sum up who she is, and she's just so awesome. ♥
I'm lost already.
Oh yeah, the whole Freddie/Katie thing. Strangely, that (and this episode generally) made me like Katie. Not as a person, haha, but as a character, she's really interesting. She seems so incredibly two-dimensional at first, just like...her whole "I've never not had a boyfriend" thing. But it's actually this serious neediness, this desperation to have someone who acts like they love her, all the time. Explains why she attached herself to Freddie so quickly. I don't know, I just find that so interesting. I feel like by showing us how she was acting with Freddie so soon after randomly sleeping with him (pet names, hanging all over him, etc), the writers were showing us how she is with every guy, every relationship. It's sad, and it makes her a lot more human. I loved it when she was quietly telling herself not to cry. ♥
When she was being all manipulative with Effy in the woods, that just added a whole extra level of desperation, and even though we probably weren't supposed to feel sorry for her there, I kind of did? Skins has this amazing way of making you feel sympathetic to almost all of the characters no matter how evil they're being, I swear. Also, I want Effy/Katie hate!sex, plz.
I really have this intense love for the show after this episode, I don't know. I feel like everything about it was done perfectly. Even though there were some things I didn't like, I liked the way they were done, if that makes sense. Things that I might not usually pay attention to--the shots of what people would see looking out of a car window, for example--seemed to really add something. Everything about it felt really real to me. When they were all looking for Katie in the morning, it really felt like the morning after, with the early sunlight and everybody looking worse for wear.
One of the things I didn't like was how Cook showed up at the Stonems' with like, a meal. Wtf? Like it was meant to be some romantic night in, as if he and Effy have DATES instead of just fuck whenever things get messed up. I was all "Cook would never, EVER do that," and then he was like "I BROUGHT A FUCKING GATEAUX" and then I burst out laughing and decided I kind of love him a little bit now. HIS LINES ARE ALMOST AS GOOD AS CHRIS'S.
Seriously though, I adored Cook here. It's like Katie. They're not just presenting him as a rather two-dimensional, slightly repulsive character. He's got issues, he's got something going on under the surface. He really cared that he hadn't been invited, and when he was asking Thomas to punch him? God, it was just...I don't even know. That bit with him laughing with the blood on his face was really, really powerful, maybe even more so because we were seeing that sort of shot for the second time.
Effy, too, I loved. Honestly, I've found the whole EFFY AND HER GANG OF FRIENDS deal a bit hard to process. But I loved how she seemed detached. I loved how she was the one they sort of needed to come because she could drive, but in the scenes where they were on their way, laughing, singing along to the radio, etc, she was just driving along in silence, straight-faced, and you could tell she was wondering why she was there at all. And when she wandered off from the cheerful group when they reached the woods? It was just perfect. It's like she's just acquired these friends and she has no idea what to do with them, when Katie would kill to be in her place. Effy's not the Queen Bee, not really. If she is, it's a total accident and like, the fault of her genes. Tony genes.
The thing with those guys and their guns? I WAS LEGIT SCARED. I was thinking it was pretty stupid at first, but during that car chase-y scene? I was honestly terrified. :/ And then in the woods too, ohhh my god. The only light on in the living room was a lamp on a time-switch and OF COURSE IT WOULD SWITCH OFF JUST AFTER THEY PUT THE FIRE OUT AND STUFF. D: I was so scared.
Cook kind of made me hate him again in that bit, but then he and Freddie were all angry and full of sexual tension so I forgot about it. I LOVE how they get so angry at each other and are like two centimetres from each other's faces. There needs to be more of this next season, and it needs to end with more kisses. I loved that Thomas didn't punch Cook. I was really thinking, from the previews and people's speculation, that Thomas was going to go psycho and be the one with the gun, I AM SO GLAD THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN. I loved how he called Cook a silly little boy or whatever, and mentioned the doughnuts in his upset little rant, and then said Pandora made his heart hurt. OH THOMAS. ♥ YOU DON'T DESERVE THIS. Also, I loved that PANDORA was the one to punch Cook.
Effy holding hands with Pandora was lovely, and I loved it when she cuddled her and kissed her on the forehead. I even kind of liked how she reached out and held Freddie's hand. Honestly, I do not want Freddie/Effy to happen, I have never been on board with it, but the way it was handled in this episode was fantastic. I liked it solely because of how fucked-up it was. Effy smashing his girlfriend's head with a rock, then going and fucking him? AWESOME. Kaya's acting was amaaaaaazing there, too. And the look he gave her at the hospital...okay, maybe I like it mostly because I don't want them to be together, but really. It was perfect. So perfectly Effy. And Freddie's finally realised that she's not this perfect lovely dream girl he thought she was. SKINS, I LOVE YOU SFM RIGHT NOW.
The scene with the shrooms/sparklers was absolutely amazing. I love how a lot of this episode made me feel like I was on the same drugs as the characters, lolol. But really, the laggy camera and the echoey voices worked so well.
JJ's line in the morning made me double over laughing, srsly. I can't even remember what he said, but it was about needing a piss and a Tic-Tac? And how Naomi and Emily 'sure do wriggle a lot' or something? OH MY GOD. Awesome for two reasons--JJ being adorable and generally clueless, and NAOMI AND EMILY HAVING SEX IN THE TENT. ♥♥ Yayyy.
When Effy was frantically ringing everyone, I really wanted her to ring Tony. Oh, and when she was crying in the bath when her Mum was washing her hair, I cried too. :(
Oh! And the music in this episode was SO PERFECT. I love how Skins uses music, generally, but especially in this episode. 'She's Lost Control' came in at the PERFECT MOMENT, and there were a ton of songs that I didn't know that just fit the scenes so, so well.
The end? I'm sort of not sure how I feel about it. I think that Cook/Effy makes sense right now more than it ever has before. I think that they're pretty much perfect for each other (though I don't actually ship them, properly). I love that she injured someone so badly they had to go to hospital and we were shown her friends turning their backs on her for it, and Cook was the one to drive her out of there in a stolen car. It's perfect, it really is. I just don't like his whole 'always' thing. It makes it seem more like a love story, and I can barely even see them in a relationship. When Effy told her Mum that they 'broke up' I thought she was simplifying it, because what she had with him was a bit more complicated than a relationship, but then he turned up with the food and I got a bit confused. I like them as people who fuck each other because they're fucked up right now and they don't know what else to do. (Same way I liked Sid and Michelle in S2.) But as serious boyfriend and girlfriend? No. :/
Not that the last scene necessarily meant that. I liked it, anyway. I liked how Effy woke up in the back seat, it reminded me of when Sid and Tony were taking her to the hospital in S1. And I liked how we didn't see who was driving right away, even though we suspected. And I liked Cook's line about the power ballads. XD
I feel like there are still things I want to say, but my brain's all confused. THIS EPISODE WAS JUST SO AWESOME. There were moments where I was sitting up and like, LEANING FORWARD, staring at the screen and waiting for what was going to come next. Like I said before, everything here was done perfectly. THIS IS WHY I LOVE SKINS.
