Appearance: Renji is tall and lean, with broad shoulders, strong arms and big hands. He has long, crimson-coloured hair he normally wears in a spiky ponytail, brown eyes, and elaborate black body markings that resemble tribal tattoos. When he's in Soul Society he usually wears the Shinigami uniform, called Shihakushō, which consists of white shitagi, black kosode, black hakama, white hakama-himo, white tabi, and waraji (thank you, Bleach Wiki). In addition, he typically wears a pair of expensive sunglasses. When the sunglasses are broken, he replaces them with a white bandanna tied around his forehead.
Personality: At first glance, Renji might come off as a cocky jerk, but there's much more to him than that. He's earnest, determined, trusting and loyal to a fault. He'll do anything for the people he cares about, and would fight to his last breath to protect them. He can be stubborn to the point of pigheadedness, and often speaks without thinking, but he has a good heart. He's also a massive dork, who's not nearly as cool as he tries to pretend he is, and he's well-liked among the members of the Gotei 13.
At times he can be moody, and prone to bouts of self-doubt. He also has a tendency to blame others for his problems instead of facing his own faults. More than anything, he craves approval - from his fellow Shinigami, from his Captain, and from Rukia - and he tries to cover for his lack of confidence with a lot of bravado.
Like most Shinigami, he's practically clueless about the human world and he relies largely on Rukia for his information - much of it inaccurate. The spirit of his Zanpakutou, Zabimaru, takes the appearance of a Nue, and its shikai and bankai forms are showy and outrageous, a lot like Renji himself.

At the Shinigami Academy Renji rose quickly through the ranks and was placed in the advanced class, where he became unlikely friends with Hinamori Momo and Kira Izuru and gradually began to grow apart from Rukia. On their first training mission in the human world, Renji's class was attacked by a group of powerful Hollows. One of the older students, Hisagi Shuuhei, ordered Renji and his friends to retreat, but they refused to abandon him. Only the timely arrival of 5th Division Captain Sousuke Aizen and his Lieutenant Ichimaru Gin saved their lives.
Renji's relationship with Rukia, which had become more distant due to the new space between them, took a further blow when Rukia was adopted into the noble Kuchiki family. Thinking that this was what they'd always wanted - the chance for a better life and a real family - Renji pretended to be happy for her and told himself not to stand in her way. He let her go, swearing to one day grow strong enough to surpass Kuchiki Byakuya, the head of the Kuchiki family and Captain of the 6th Division, and finally become worthy of Rukia.
After graduating from the Shinigami Academy, Renji served under Captain Aizen in the 5th Division with Hinamori and Kira until Gin was promoted to Captain of the 3rd. Aizen kept Hinamori and Kira as adjutants for himself and Gin, and transferred Renji - who he considered the most unpredictable, and thus least useful - to the 11th Division under Zaraki Kenpachi. There, Renji developed a friendship with Madarame Ikkaku, who would later help him to reach bankai. Renji fit in well among the rough, battle-ready members of the 11th, but his goal was still to surpass Byakuya, and he accepted the promotion to Lieutenant of the 6th Division on the same day Rukia left for her fateful mission in the human world. Instead of telling Rukia immediately, he decided to wait until she had finished her mission, but she never returned.
After Rukia gave her powers to Ichigo, Renji traveled to the human world with Byakuya to capture her and bring her back to Soul Society to stand trial. He saw Rukia giving up her powers as a betrayal of everything they'd worked for, and struggled on their return with the news that Soul Society actually planned to execute her for her "crimes". Caught between his estranged friendship with Rukia and his loyalty to the Gotei 13, he blamed Ichigo for taking Rukia's powers and putting her in danger.
When Ichigo and his friends invaded Soul Society to rescue Rukia, Renji disobeyed orders and challenged Ichigo. Ichigo won, and when Renji saw his determination to stop the execution, he begged him to save Rukia. Renji was imprisoned for ignoring orders and, even worse, for the shame of losing to the invaders. After talking with the spirit of his zanpakutou Zabimaru, Renji escaped from his cell, determined to save Rukia. He trained in secret until the morning of the execution, but was intercepted by Byakuya on his way to Soukyoku Hill. They fought, and even though Renji had successfully mastered bankai, he was defeated.
Once he had recovered, Renji continued to the execution grounds and arrived just in time to witness Ichigo save Rukia. Renji attempted to flee with her while Ichigo held off the members of the Gotei 13, but their escape was stopped by Captain Aizen, who revealed he was the one who had orchestrated Rukia's execution for his own motives. Renji and Ichigo tried to stop Aizen, but he successfully stole the Hougyoku Urahara Kisuke had hidden in Rukia and escaped to the Hollow world, Hueco Mundo, with his conspirators.
In the aftermath of Aizen's betrayal, Renji and Rukia began to rekindle their friendship and make up for the forty years they'd lost. Renji reaffirmed his loyalty to Byakuya, who had been injured protecting Rukia in the fight with Aizen, and admitted that if Byakuya were dead he'd have no one to compete with. Not long after, Renji, Rukia and a team of other high-ranking Shinigami were assigned to the human world to prepare for the coming war with Aizen.

Threadhopping: Definitely! If a thread is supposed to be private, it'll be marked as locked. Otherwise, go nuts.
Anything that shouldn't be mentioned near this character: Nothing really. Renji's generally pretty easy-going, although he can be kind of defensive about his tattoos. And suggestive comments about his girlfriend are likely to be met with serious disapproval. If he's not happy with where the conversation is going, you'll find out pretty quick.
Shapeshift/bodyswap/spit at/step on/etc: Yes please! Though I would prefer if you checked with me first before doing anything involving shapeshifting/bodyswapping, just so we can work out the specifics.
Maim/Murder/Death: Check with me first. Renji's no stranger to battle, so wounding/maiming will usually be okay. I'll consider murder and death as well, but only with a convincing argument.
Hugging/Kissing/Badtouch/Other Non-Violent Physical Contact: Hugging will be treated with various reactions depending on the character. Hugs from other men are likely to be greeted with a fist to the face, unless Renji is either: a) very drunk, or b) under the effect of an appropriate virus. Unless your name happens to be Kuchiki Rukia, the same rules apply to kissing, badtouching, and any other attempts at seduction. He waited more than forty years to be with Rukia, he's not going to ruin that now by being unfaithful to her. Different rules apply for memes, of course!
Is there anything you need us to know about interacting with this character? Special physical features, fighting abilities, STUFF: Unless they're blind, the first thing anyone is likely to notice about Renji is his body markings. They're extensive, covering his chest, abs, upper arms, back and forehead. He's also technically dead, so only characters who are sensitive to spirits/the supernatural should be able to see him, unless he's in a Gigai (a sort of "temporary body" that Shinigami use when they need to interact in the living world).
Also, if you're going to pick a battle with him, be warned that he's considered one of the strongest fighters in Soul Society. His reiatsu (spiritual pressure) alone would be enough to intimidate most people. That said, unless you've done something to really earn his ire, he won't try to kill you.
