The first time Lee Sungmin meets Cho Kyuhyun is at a mutual friend’s house. There’s a meeting Sungmin wasn’t supposing to join (“I don’t really enjoy these things, I rather being with few people,” he’d later tell him, which Kyuhyun would answer with a little smile and a “Same. Maybe it was fate y’know, us meeting.”), but he ended up there anyway since he was helping out a friend of his whom had a broken arm -he felt kind of guilty.
When he returns from the kitchen with drinks for the other guests, there’s a boy who wasn’t there before. He’s tall and rather skinny, his hair is a little long and tousled and he has quite a few acne scars painting his cheeks, but they highlight his good looks in an odd way, Sungmin thinks.
The boy stares at him, and Sungmin swears he sees a spark in those goodly eyes as he stares back, heart beating fast in his chest and breath hitched. The moment doesn’t last long -though if felt like hours to Sungmin- and they soon divert gazes from each other; and just there Sungmin knows, feels this is just the start, their start.
-
Kyuhyun grew up in a rather wealthy family; just him, his older sister and their parents. They were absent only when necessary (contrary at what some would think), always worrying over their children, making sure they lacked nothing -especially the love that only a family could offer.
Despite being raised with love and been taught the differences between what is good and bad; Kyuhyun couldn’t help but think there was something about all of this that wasn’t right. There was a fire within him that wouldn’t cease.
Not until he first robbed a little 24/7 shop when he was sixteen.
The excitement and adrenaline provided by only taking a few snacks without paying was like a bucket of cool water. Used to following rules ever since he was a child, this new experience opened his eyes to a whole new world. One he enjoyed the most. Breaking rules it’s definitively my thing.
And just like that, as soon as he got a car of his own, he left home and choose to live his own life, staying at cheap motels, registering with different aliases (just for the fun of it), eating of whatever he could steal from shops and driving to wherever he wanted to.
-
The click instantly, recognizing a mutual love for soft music, classic weapons and wine. They spend the rest of the afternoon and part of the night talking about these and some other random topics, only coming out to the balcony so Kyuhyun can smoke a cigarette.
“So, Sungmin-ssi, are you studying, working? Or maybe both?” he asks, smoke leaving his lips in the form of mysterious waves and Sungmin’s eyes lingers more than necessary on this scene before his mind reminds him that he was asked a question.
He clears his throat, earning an amused side look from Kyuhyun and quickly answers, “Well, I am majoring in Literature; working on my thesis more specifically, though sincerely speaking, it’s been so boring these past months. There are no more challenges, nothing entertaining anymore,” he sighs, and once more Kyuhyun is staring at him (through the cigarette smoke this time), the spark from before returning but still unreadable for Sungmin. “Guess this is how life’s supposed to be,” he finishes, shrugging rather awkwardly. Kyuhyun hums and puts out his cigarette, waving a hand for the other to follow him inside again.

Born in a loving family, Sungmin was the firstborn of two, his younger brother born two years later. They weren’t rich, but they won’t consider themselves poor either. The family was just average.
When he was four, his father died unexpectedly, and since then, his mother became their strength and support. She never got married again, but being a single mother never affected her relationship with their sons. Sungmin and his baby brother, Sungjin, always followed the rules, being the kids of a once well known policeman, and in return, they grew up with the liberty of doing what they wanted to, his mom never trying to impose anything on them.
That’s why, when Sungmin decided to write instead of becoming something he knew his mother always wanted him to be -a lawyer of all things- she didn’t say nor did she do anything against it, instead supporting him thoughtfully whenever she could.
With a dream to pursue, he went to Seoul, rented a little apartment and entered at one of the most prestigious universities the capital city had to offer to study what he was sure was his passion.
-
When Kyuhyun finally decides to leave the meeting, Sungmin even accompanies him to the door and there, leaning against the door frame, he takes a last glance at the other’s outfit. He’s clad in dark gray skinny jeans, a worn t-shirt and a black formal jacket, and Sungmin wonders, really wonders for a moment how someone looking so disheveled can look classy at the same time. He doesn’t dwell much in this though, for his eyes soon fall on Kyuhyun’s backside, enjoying the view as he repeats in his mind the last words the taller said to him.
“I’ll see you soon then, Sungmin-ssi. Promise.”
-
They do see each other again -just out of luck if you ask Sungmin- around three weeks later their first meeting.
Sungmin’s on his way home after a meeting with his younger brother for lunch that was mostly to catch up and talk about what are they going to do for their mom’s birthday this year.
As he walks (he’d always preferred to walk, sometimes it’d bring him to places he didn’t know of) he suddenly hears a honk near him, following by a “Yah, Sungmin-ssi!” so he turns around, and he’s actually a bit surprised to see Cho Kyuhyun inside a black Hyundai Santa Fe waving a hand in his direction, “Need a ride?” he asks, and suddenly Sungmin founds walking kind of lame. He gets in the car and greets Kyuhyun awkwardly.
“So, where do you live Sungmin-ssi?”
“Sungmin.” He founds himself blurting.
Kyuhyun shots him a confused side look, “Excuse me?”
“A-ah, I-I mean, just call me Sungmin, you can drop the ssi. It’s too formal.” Sungmin frowns and waves a hand dismissively; he has never really liked formalities between people around his age.
Kyuhyun chuckles, “All right then Sungmin, you can call me just Kyuhyun.”
Sungmin nods. Kyuhyun once again asks where to go, and the older looks out the window with a smile.
They end up driving around Seoul instead of dropping Sungmin at his house.
-
They develop sort of a routine. Kyuhyun picks up Sungmin home and they go driving around the city to discover a new place together or go to a favorite spot they want to show the other.
Is in this kind of journeys where they share their first kiss. Or, to be more specific, where Sungmin first steals a kiss from Kyuhyun (and maybe his heart too).
It’s also during these little escapades that Sungmin gets to know the real Kyuhyun.
They’re on the outskirts of the city when Kyuhyun stops outside a grocery store, parking in a spot so discreet that it’s almost as if they’re hiding. He tells Sungmin to stay inside the car, “I’m just getting something” he says, and goes inside the store.
Less than five minutes after he comes back, hand gripping a gun fervently, and as he nears the car he tells Sungmin to start the car. Sungmin, albeit surprised, does as he’s told and hops into the driver seat, starting the car just as Kyuhyun jumps in on the other seat. They drive as fast as the car allows them to in the opposite direction, and, when Sungmin thinks they’re far enough, he stops the car and looks at Kyuhyun, silently asking what the hell just happened.
Kyuhyun sighs, fiddling with the gun that’s now on his lap and murmurs, “I-I just felt this was the right moment to let you know this about me. This-” he holds up the gun and takes out a bunch of money out of his jacket, “is what I do. It’s what gives meaning to my life, what I enjoy the most and I definitively don’t plan to stop doing it.” he finishes decidedly, looking at the other in the eyes.
Sungmin just stays there, surprise and shock all over his face and Kyuhyun turns his head away, “You can leave. You won’t see me again if that’s what you want.”
In the end, Kyuhyun’s the shocked one when Sungmin jumps him and practically rapes the hell out of his lips, throwing the gun and money onto the car floor and dragging him to the backseat. He always had a thing for bad guys, after all.
Soon, those little escapades turn into robbery getaways.
-
It’s Christmas Eve when it happens. Sungmin is walking down the street, wanting nothing more than to be home already since that Christmas party his friends invited him to was just so boring. Better alone, he thinks as he enjoys the light snow that falls over the city. A sudden horn startles him and he jumps slightly before turning to the source of such sound.
“We should stop meeting like this, Mr. Lee.” a voice calls from inside the black Santa Fe and Sungmin rolls his eyes as he enters said car.
“You should stop trying to sound mysterious, it doesn’t fit you,” he says, flicking Kyuhyun’s forehead before pecking him on the lips. “Merry Christmas, Kyu.”
“Merry Christmas, Min. Wanna go celebrating?” Kyuhyun smirks, pointing the backseat of the car.
Sungmin’s eyes shine when he sees the guns that lay there, “Sure.”
-
They end up at the same grocery store where Kyuhyun first showed Sungmin the real him. It brings good memories, Kyuhyun says, and Sungmin turn red and coughs a little.
The plan is simple: Kyuhyun enters the store, steals some bottles of wine and maybe a bit of cash for them while Sungmin stays near the car watching over him with the other gun, just in case he needs it (which Sungmin wishes not, because he has never fired a gun before).
After fifteen minutes, Sungmin starts to worry; Kyuhyun has never taken that long before. And his worries don’t go to waste since he soon hears a shooting sound and he panics, mind racing with possibilities, What if they shoot Kyu? What if he’s injured? What if he injured someone?
In the end he gets an answer when Kyuhyun comes rushing to him yelling at him to “Fucking start the car”, and Sungmin feels like he’s having a déjà vu, just that this time there’s blood in Kyuhyun’s old shirt and somebody is actually running after him.
He rushes to the car and starts it with trembling fingers. Soon Kyuhyun hops in the copilot seat and they drive off, as fast as the first time, if not more, and the taller tells Sungmin to drive a little trough the streets at the other end of the city, just to be sure and to help relaxing the both of them.
When they finally stop, Sungmin’s still shaking and when he looks at the younger his heart stops for a bit. Kyuhyun is frozen, tears staining his cheeks -though he probably doesn’t notice this- and he can’t stop staring at his hands which, just as his shirt, are covered in blood. He turns to look at Sungmin, mouth opening a closing several times before he can utter anything.
Sungmin beats him though. “Kyu,” he says softly, “Kyu, what happened?” his voice cracks a little at the end, and it’s as if that’s what takes for Kyuhyun to come back to his senses.
“I’m-I’m not really sure, everything was going smoothly and then this guy appeared out of nowhere and tried to stop me when I was on the register. I told him to get back, but he just kept walking towards me. ‘Get back or I’ll kill you’, that’s what I said to him. I-I didn’t really meant to Min, you know me; I wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t necessary, but the guy wouldn’t stop and he even tried to choke me. There was no other way.”
Sungmin breathes deeply before his next question, “And… did you… did you really killed him?”
Kyuhyun ducks his head, “I-I don’t know. I shoot him in the torso, but I’m not sure if I hit something vital. All I know is that suddenly there was blood everywhere and I needed to get out of there. The cashier probably contacted the police though.”
Sungmin nods even though the taller isn’t looking at him. Then he decides to man up and embraces the younger. Kyuhyun holds him back and Sungmin knows there’s blood all over him now, but he doesn’t care. Not when his Kyuhyun is in this state, confused and scared.
“Everything will be fine Kyu, everything will be fine.” He mumbles against his hair, trying to reassure not only the man in his arms, but himself too.
-
After an hour, Kyuhyun is driving them to Sungmin’s place to drop the older off, when a patrol suddenly pops out of practically nowhere and tells them to stop. The black haired man convinces Kyuhyun to do as the officer says (“Is better to act as if nothing happened”). His hands are clean now, and they’re covered enough to hide every stain of blood there was.
Or so they think.
The policeman seems to have the best vision in the world, catching a glimpse of blood in the younger’s neck, and he gets suspicious, asking questions Kyuhyun doesn’t want to deal with at the moment. And then the officer is threatening to call back up and taking them to the station, and Kyuhyun panics, so he takes out his blood-stained gun, and shoots.
And then Sungmin’s crying, not for the man they left sprawled in a blood puddle, but for Kyuhyun, for them. Because he knows what this means. They both know. There’s no turning back now. The only thing left to do is to run away.
-
The black Santa Fe he’s accustomed to ride as if it was his own car by now, it’s now replaced by a bright red, newer model and Sungmin wonders how on earth Kyuhyun thinks this thing won’t attract attention. Surely, it’s a different car, but it seems a bit… blatant.
“Kyu, God knows I love you, but this… this it’s stupid. How are you planning on escaping on such a… flamboyant thing?”
Inside the car, Kyuhyun takes off the sunglasses he’s wearing, rolls his eyes and smirks, “Sungmin, the more we blend and act as if nothing happened, the harder it'd be for them to catch us.” He’s completely different from yesterday, gone is the fear he saw in those eyes last night, and Sungmin is rather thankful that the confident man he’s used to see in Kyuhyun since he first met him is back.
But then his mind processes the last word and Sungmin freezes, “Wait, us? What do you mean us?”
Kyuhyun turns to him, his face is fierce but there’s sadness clear in his eyes, “Min, you can't go back home now. You were there with me, people saw you; heck the dude’s probably dead and they may be looking for us as we talk! You got murder on you, just like me. You can't go home.”
Sungmin stares, the words processing slowly in his head. Sure, he enjoys robbing with Kyuhyun by his side; doing little works that keep alive the flame the younger ignited in him. But this, murder, wasn’t part of his plans -and he knows neither was part of Kyuhyun’s.
He knows he’s just trying to survive. Kyuhyun dreads getting caught, but he’d never give up robbing to work for a living. It just isn’t his style, it isn’t who he is.
"Run away with me Ming. It’d be just the two of us. Doing what we want, fooling the law, living the life…" Kyuhyun continues, extending a hand towards him, and there's a spark in his eyes which Sungmin remembers seeing. Wildness, he recognizes finally, after all that they've been living for the past four years. Maybe that’s what made you love him all along, he thinks, and suddenly there’s no hesitation, no more ‘what if’s’, no more fear. All that Sungmin cares about right now it’s that the man in front of him loves him and he loves him back and trusts him enough to leave all behind and follow him wherever fate takes them.
He takes the offered hand that helps him enter the car and nods. Kyuhyun then grins at him cutely -one would never suspect that this man has killed somebody just yesterday night- and Sungmin feels the urge to jump him, so he does, kissing the younger as passionately as he can, hot and messy, the excitement of a life of crime and action waiting for them coursing through his veins.
The kiss slowly loses its intensity until it’s only the sensual moving of lips against lips, and Sungmin finally breaks the touch to look right into Kyuhyun’s eyes, both smiling and noses barely touching, “Just the two of us?” he asks, as if to reassure himself. Kyuhyun’s smile grows wider as he caresses the now blonde’s sides, “Just the two of us. Forever.”
Sungmin peppers his face with soft kisses for about five minutes before they’re able to drive off.
-
A year into outrunning the law, they have done a lot of things, being robbing some gas stations, 24/7 shops or even some banks, or just visiting new places around the country.
Sungmin dyes their hair color from time to time (something he already did to himself before, but now Kyuhyun uses it as a way of disguise); they change the car color and plates every once in a while (or when needed), change from cheap to more luxurious inns when the income allows them to, they act as the most oblivious and innocent people in the world and above all, they never say each other’s name when in public for somebody might pick up on them and call the law.
They are now so used to just call each other honey, baby, or even hyung -in Kyuhyun’s case, than they do it almost every time when they’re alone as well. And Sungmin likes it (even the hyung), for when they’re alone at night, limbs tangled, sweat running down their backs and breaths mingled, Kyuhyun would whisper any of these words in his ear, and he’d melt, body going limp as the younger chuckles hoarsely against the soft skin of his lover.
-
Sometimes -during their quarrels- Sungmin gets cocky, bragging about how he actually went to school and was majoring in literature, doing something productive out of his life.
Kyuhyun just huffs, smirks and teases him, “Why don’t you just go home to your mommy then, baby? You could try it y’know? Going back to what you were; you may get the capital punishment, but with that face of yours, it probably would be reduced to life imprisonment.”
Sungmin then pouts at him, but soon he’d laugh at the younger and everything would be smooth again.
Because that’s just how they are.
-
At the end of the day, Sungmin thinks, he’s just like Kyuhyun. They have grit, one could say. And he’s so sure he can feel it with every part of his body, they mean to stay free or go down together.
But for now they’re still alive, and for as long as they keep it that way, Sungmin knows they'll be alright.

Trivia:
1. The Christmas part it's actually based on something that, according to my research, happened one Christmas to Bonnie & Clyde.
2. Which is funny, since it was pure luck it fitted the Christmas theme xD
3. The dyeing hair and honey/baby thing were again, things Bonnie & Clyde actually did.
4. Various forms of repeat robbery are punishable by death in South Korea.
5. Some inspiration was taken from the Bonnie & Clyde Musical lol.
