History: Hitsugaya's history and story synopsis thus far

[Optional] Character Development and Relationship Transfer from previous RP:
Upon arriving in luceti, Hitsugaya found himself in a situation that he honestly did not know how to handle: he'd just been duped into stabbing a person he considered family. In fact, all the major life choices he'd made up to that point were always carefully considered and Hitsugaya always -- always -- took the road that would he thought would best protect Hinamori Momo. To be manipulated into stabbing her shook Hitsugaya to the very core. He came into Luceti with no close friends, believing that he'd killed the one person he'd vowed to protect.

He spent a month floundering, simply trying to settle into what was his new home, before Matsumoto Rangiku arrived in Luceti. He'd never really admit it, but the familiar voice over the journal network had him first wilting in sheer relief -- he needed a friendly face -- and he wasted no time at all in going to the bar. (It was completely apropos, he figured, that his lieutenant would spend her first moments in Luceti in the bar, of all places.) It was there that they discovered that, while they'd been pulled from the same battle, their timelines did not match: he was from her future, by less than a day.

Ever perceptive, Matsumoto drew the story from him and heard firsthand how Aizen had cast his illusion on them all. How Hitsugya had planned and strategized and fought with compatriots and strangers both. How he'd worked so very hard to corner Aizen. How his heart and mind had broken irreparably when the body impaled on his sword was not Aizen's, but Hinamori's. How he'd snapped in that moment and attacked in a blind rage -- and finally how he'd been badly hurt. He was less than completely forthcoming, but Matsumoto knew him better than anyone, save for his granny and Hinamori. She tried to alleviate his guilt, but the conversation only brought those feelings he'd tried so hard to squash to the surface.

His time was spent mostly just... living. Mundane periods of domestic life were interrupted occasionally by Luceti's penchant for experimentation and. Well. Just plain weird things. Before long, though, it was apparent that Hitsugaya was losing his fight to be normal. It was an unsettling period of events that forced everything to a head: Luceti's own way of messing with its residents culminated in Hitsugaya reliving that last moment with Hinamori and his complete failure to even avenge her afterward. He heard her voice. He saw her blood coating his sword. It was there, always there, dogging his every movement and thought. Despite Matsumoto's words and efforts, the guilt continued to weigh on him.

During a time when monsters fell from the sky (literally) and began attacking Luceti's residents, Hitsugaya could not stay out of the fray, despite a rapidly declining emotional state. He (almost literally, again) ran into a friend -- Brook -- and this event would lead to a breakdown that was long in coming. Brook, unknown to Hitsugaya, had been mistakenly amplifying the harsh echoes of Hinamori's supposed death.

Hitsugaya froze.

And, to put it mildly, freaked out. He overreacted to the monsters around him and the ensuing blast of uncontrolled reiatsu brought Matsumoto running to his side. In the ensuing conversation -- if one can call her forcing logic onto his guilt a conversation -- Hitsugaya came to realize one very important thing: He was not to blame. Every time he tried to deflect the conversation or refused to (or couldn't) see reason, Matsumoto firmly guided him back. Her pointing out that he'd been used so wholly because of his emotional response to Hinamori may have been a low blow, but it turned his rage away from himself and toward those actually responsible.

He was already glad that she was there with him in Luceti. After that, she became his rock -- and thorn in his side. She stood by him and poked him to speak with Hinamori when she came to Luceti. She... made him dance when their hosts, once again made everything go crazy. (Hitsugaya would almost rather the monsters again.)

He has other friendships in Luceti but it's Matsumoto he counts on. Sometimes, he counts on her to be a complete pain in the ass. In Soul Society, she's been a constant, trusted friend. In Luceti, she proved that his trust his not misplaced and it's driven him to become a better captain -- a better person.

Then she was kidnapped by their hosts and returned as a small child. Hitsugaya learned one more very important thing about her: Matsumoto Rangiku is one hell of a brat.

He'll never let her live it down.

Personality: Hitsugaya Toushirou was one of those kids: precocious, bratty, and too mature of his age. As a young kid with powerful reiatsu and a too-serious demeanor, he grew up knowing that quite a few people were scared of him. He told himself it didn't matter, since he had Hinamori and Granny and they smiled around him. Even treated him like a kid. So, grateful to them for never treating him differently, he repaid them with fierce loyalty.

Though Hitsugaya surrounded himself with few close friends, it was more than enough for him. He didn't do interpersonal relationships that well. Not a lot of people responded well to his blunt way of stating things, or that annoying sarcastic streak that surfaced here and again, or maybe it was the way he implied everyone else was somehow less than intelligent - without really meaning to, but maybe that was his lack of tact showing. Some people appreciated it and he'd go out of his way to make sure those were the people who stayed safe.

People like Granny, Hinamori, and Matsumoto. Those were the people that could always count on him being around, whether they really needed him or not. Should they be threatened, then his usual quick-wittedness can become single-mindedness and there was no talking him out of it, not until it's done. It might take some time, but Hitsugaya could win awards, if there were any given for being absolutely pig-headed. Those he has called friends are few and far between, but he would give anything for them, up to and including his position and possibly his life.

That nearly infinite capacity for loyalty carried over into a sense of duty that left some other divisions looking like they were populated - maybe even led by - slackers of the lowest degree. What Hitsugaya set out to do, he did. He made every effort to be a man of his word, sometimes unabashedly calling out other people's stupidity while he did so.

They should have known better anyway.

He's quiet - when no ones interrupts or says anything stupid - and hard-working. Once he decides something's got to be done, he'll get it done. It's part of his determination to prove that, despite his youth, he deserves the place of power he has.

Hitsugaya likes his routine and he has very set ways of doing things. He tackles his reports in the same order, takes lunch, his breaks, and his afternoon walk at the same time every day, and values these things highly. Change -- even small things -- tend to set him on edge and ill at ease. Drastic change, while he eventually adapts well, usually sets him to floundering for footing and extremely prone to snapping. There is, however, one good thing about his aversion to change: He will take his time making any decision and consider all his options and all angles very carefully. While that can sometimes stall him, it usually leads to wise decisions (even if he's making them while extremely cranky).

Hitsugaya was never an unfeeling, cold bastard, like some people have said he was. He was just tactless and blunt. He held grudges. He expected a lot from his subordinates, but it was never more than he'd do himself. All in all, he never thought he was that different from anyone else.

Besides, the people who call him a bastard were never those who made an effort to get to know him. Those who landed on his good side had a hell of a loyal friend. Smart and quick-witted, intelligent, sarcastic at times, harsh at other times, and mostly even-tempered (unless a friend was messed with), Hitsugaya was a good captain. A good friend.

And a single minded enemy one really didn't want.

Skills/Abilities:
Canonically, Hitsugaya is captain of the Tenth Division of the Gotei 13 Protection squads; his abilities are elite to the shinigami. He wields Hyourinmaru, which is said to be the strongest ice-type zanpakutou in Soul Society.

The sword has two stages of release: shikai and bankai. The zanpakutou's shikai release command is soten ni zase. (Lit. "sit upon the frozen heavens"). While in shikai, Hyourinmaru looks nearly like its sealed state; the only difference is an additional crescent blade attached by a chain to the sword's hilt. Hitsugaya, when the sword is in this state, can release a great ice/water dragon from it, designed to freeze and overwhelm his enemies. In addition, when the chain is used, it freezes whatever it's wrapped around.

Hitsugya's bankai, Daiguren Hyourinmaru manifests itself in ice that partially covers Hitsugaya's body. A dragon's head forms over his right hand and the hilt, the ice encases his arm, and wings sprout from his back. The bankai also sports a long dragon's tail, and icy claws envelope Hitsugaya's left hand and both feet. In addition, three four-petaled flowers hover in the air above Hitsugaya, and these fade away petal by petal as Hyourinmaru's bankai is held longer and longer. The zanpakutou's tsuba also changes, turning into an eight-pointed star, rather than it's usual four points.

Hitsugaya is capable of using a handful of special techniques while in bankai, including ryuusenka and sennen hyoro.

Ryuusenka, quite literally, encases enemies in ice when Hitsugaya stabs them. After withdrawing, the ice shatters, taking the enemy along with it.

Sennen hyoro literally means "thousand year ice prison" and it's name describes the technique well. Hitsugaya is able to freeze the water in the air and form massive pillars of ice, which then, with a turn of Hitsugaya's wrist, imprison and freeze his enemies.

In times when defense is needed, Hitsugaya can close the dragon's wings around himself, creating a barrier that an enemy is hard-pressed to break. As long as water is in the air, Hitsugaya can reform both his sword and the ice dragon that envelops him, should it be shattered or cut.

In addition, Hitsugaya can also use kidou, a type of spell that can be cast to either destroy or bind enemies; he, however, usually relies on his sword rather than use kidou. He is also proficient in shunpo, or flash steps.

Mentally and emotionally, Hitsugaya is an intelligent fighter, able to analyze his opponent quickly and he is not afraid to try new techniques. In his battle with Halibel (or Harribel, if you prefer), he stated that he'd never tried a particular technique before and that he wasn't sure how it would work. Toushirou can be somewhat fearless, full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes.

In some ways, though, those same strengths -- his single-minded attempts to attack and his fearlessness -- can lead to his downfall. Hitsugaya is easily pulled from an all-business demeanor by a few well-placed remarks and that stubborn fearlessness becomes recklessness. His business-like veneer and determined indifferent approach to a fight can easily be washed away.

While he strives not to be ruled by emotion, Hitsugaya's all-encompassing hatred for Aizen and his ilk has more than once forced him to attack recklessly and led to serious injury. Because Hitsugaya can be easily manipulated if the right buttons are pushed, he can quickly become a liability to himself and to those around him. In a fight, he tends to forget everything but the insult to himself or the threat to his friends and that puts him into dangerous positions. While his recent confrontation with Matsumoto has made him face this particular weakness of his, he is nowhere near overcoming it.

Physically, Hitsugaya has not mastered control of his bankai completely and is still learning all the techniques and abilities at his fingertips. His power is yet immature (as most of his opponents have surmised and pointed out to him, much to his chagrin.) Being smaller in stature than all of his opponents has not played a role in his fights canonically, but I can see where it could cause problems, in the right (or wrong) situation. He is proficient with swordplay and some hand-to-hand, but his techniques have always been augmented by Hyourinmaru's power and kidou.

First Person Sample:
[Hitsugaya hates technology. He usually gets something wrong. As a result, there's a string of muttering and button pushing before he gets to the meat of his message.]

Damn stupid thing. There's gotta be a way to... [Pause. There's a grunt and something that sounds suspiciously like the heel of his hand smacking the side of the device.] There. 'Bout damned time.

[He clears his throat. From his tone, one could guess rightly that he's very annoyed with even having to ask this.] Does anyone know a good place to practice kata here? Anytime I find a place, there ends up being an audience.

[And now down to business. He's not above doing this in public.] And Matsumoto. Try cleaning up after yourself. Whatever you left in the sink is starting to attract flies. [Truth is, he can't really remember who left what in the sink, but he knows it wasn't him.]

[He goes to end the message and ends up, once again, stymied by the technology. He'll figure this out. Eventually. Until then, be treated to more muttering.]

Oh, come on... This thing- [There. Over and out.]

Third Person Sample:
Some might call him foolish, standing in the snow in a field as he was. Those people who would obviously didn't know Hitsugaya in the slightest. The snow was deep and the air was still, a counterpoint to the howling winds that had carried the storm here. The sky was still overcast, though, with the last vestiges of the storm. That was all right; Hitsugaya may prefer an open sky for aesthetics' sake, but the heavy clouds still there aided him now.

His fingers ran over Hyourinmaru's braided hilt before he pulled the sword from his back. He didn't want to think about what would happen if he ended up world-hopping again and landed without his zanpakutou. Hyourinmaru was such an integral part of him... He sighed a bit and resolutely pushed that thought to the back of his mind. It hadn't happened and there was no use dwelling on what might conceivably happen. He had enough problems in the present to borrow worry from nonexistant futures.

Settling into a stance, Hitsugaya began to call on Hyourinmaru, intent on running through a series of simple kata with the dragon. Simple, easy things, but one must practice the basics in order to keep other skills sharp. He wasn't sure what garnered his attention first: the movement out of the corner of his eye or the presence that washed over him. The dragon grumbled in the back of his mind and Hitsugya found himself agreeing with the sentiment: he hated being interrupted.

Especially so since this man had followed him out twice before. Hitsugaya spun on his heel, brows lowered in a glower and zanpakutou hanging from loose fingers. He was really getting sick of this. "What?" he snapped, and, so help him, if it was the same answer again...

The man gave him a sheepish grin. Hitsugaya steeled himself for the answer. "I wanted to see the dragon again."

Oh, for the love of... Hitsugaya snarled and abruptly sheathed his sword. He was practicing, not running a petting zoo. It didn't help that the dragon preened, pleased with the extra attention.

Vain lizard.

Hitsugaya stalked off the field without another word. There had to be another place he could actually get some practice in somewhere in this godforsaken place. Preferably one without spectators.
