needle-play, kinda

i've had diabetes for fourteen years. it's a strange beast. i enjoy telling the story of how i diagnosed myself in second grade (it's better in person; i won't post it here). there's a lot of literature out there for newly-diagnosed kids: "don't be embarassed, your friends will still like you, your life can go on as usual." i was the opposite ( Read more... )

Here's the punishment I was thinking of:

some number (let's say 20) of strokes for the number of tests under 5 a day. Meaning if you test 5 times on 6 days, but only 4 on the other, you get spanked 30 times. 4 tests on 2 days gets you 40. This means that if you don't test at all during the entire week, that comes out to 700. And if you want to be able to sit down for the next month, I strongly recommend testing regularly.

And once the ball gets rolling a bit in this we add blood sugar levels into the equation. If 1 test has a result 400+ or 2 are 300+, you get another 10. They're bad numbers, but at least you tested, so the punishment is less than that for lack of testing.

Good?

i seriously read those numbers and had to shake my head vigorously in order to process that.

we still haven't talked about when these punishments are happening. i'm guessing you're thinking weekly, but i'm thinking daily. let's talk about this tonight?

20 strokes per missed test? fair. i might even venture to say it should be more if we do this daily? we'll work out the details. that being said, i don't understand the arithmetic of your second sentence... it means i've missed one test out of the whole week, but i get 30 instead of 20? huh?

(can you see this as a word problem on a high school exam? hehe.)

the arithmetic doesn't work because it's a typo.

And I suggested weekly because while daily would be ideal, let's face it: we probably won't meet every day. Although daily can be arranged.

Also, I don't want to know what kind of high school you went to...

LOL, it's too bad you won't make it though. I also am unable to make it *but I'm still going to*. (so should you!)

About the planned endeavor, I'd be very interested to talk to you and the boy about it.. I've been thinking an awful lot in the past couple of months about discipline and how it can be used constructively (I've had the help of a very interested bottom). Recently I think we've learned a lot of new things about it just from experience and thinking, and I can see a lot of potential similarities in what you guys are writing about.

(I don't really mean techniques, since we've kept it relatively straightforward in that respect, but just in understanding why it sometimes feels 'right' and why sometimes it doesn't, and then why we keep finding so many exceptions to both!)

it's not that. i actually have a free theater ticket. i'll see you next week, though!

or sooner? i'd love to talk to you (and maybe the aforesaid interested bottom? or not?) about these experiences. it'd be a kick to know i'm not reinventing the wheel w/this plan...
