Can somebody please explain what is going on, right now?

All I know is I just woke up in an unfamiliar house in unfamiliar clothing, and there are... photos of me with people who I definitely have never seen before in my life!

You are in the town of Mayfield where you have been assigned to a household of four, consisting of a mother, father, and two children. Nobody knows why or how we ended up here, nor has anybody found a way out. All of your things have been confiscated, but you can get them back by purchasing them at the local store with a letter from the mayor. Unfortunately, in the time that I've been here - a little less than a month, really - I've only ever received one letter, myself.

Did that help to clear things up a little?
