Our first stop is Spaceship Earth, the giant pentakis dodecahedron (“giant golf ball”) that looms over Future World. My dad is itching for Mission Space, Disney's newest thrill ride that simulates a spaceship landing on Mars, but Jim, Joe, Erin and I want to take our time. “It’s the perfect way to start,” Joe says. "And there’s no line."

It’s a dark, slow moving ride that explores the history of human communication from the first cave paintings to internet and technologies of the possible future. I could sit on the ride inside Spaceship Earth for hours, listening to Jeremy Iron’s soothing narration, learning about the hieroglyphs and papyrus scrolls of Egypt, and the Roman Road Network, a double edged sword that served as the most extensive means of communication that the world has seen, that also lead to Rome’s downfall. I’m amazed at how smoothly we ride through history, in less than the thirteen minutes we have seen the recreation of cave interiors and Egyptian temples, all the way to the imagined digital classrooms and video communication of our future.
