Wizards:
*LotR: A race known as Ainer or Valar. Gandalf & Saruman belong to the subspecies Maiar.
*D&D: A creature of any race can be a mage, sorcerer, or wizard.
Orcs:
*LotR: Look like Zombie Elves or Nosferatu.
*D&D: Githyanki resemble Tolkien Orcs. D&D Orcs are gorilla-shaped with warthog-like faces & green, brown, blue, or grey skin.
Elves:
*LotR: There seem to be 3 kinds, though I've seen no images depicting skin tones other than Caucasian. They're immortal & taller than humans.
*D&D: Come in every color of the rainbow & then some. Drow or Dunmer as Elder Scrolls calls them are black/grey/blue skinned, the former usually having only white hair. Called Halflings as a species rather than as a nickname.
Goblins:
*LotR: In the book, it's what Hobbits call Orcs. In the MMORPG, Goblins are Hobbit-sized Orcs.
*Halfling-sized Orcs.
Ents:
*LotR: Huge humanoid trees, usually pleasant. Unpleasant ones who become more tree-like are called Hourns. Female Ents (Entwives) have been wiped out of existence.
*D&D: Identical but smaller, usually hostile. Called Treants.
Trolls:
*LotR: Resemble D&D Orcs with their massive bodies, tusks, & flat pig-like noses. Bald, come in gloomy rocky colors. Turn to stone in the sun like Gargoyles, only they don't turn back when the sun goes down.
*D&D: Ridiculously long arms, green skin, very long thin carrot-like noses, not bald. Only weaknesses are fire & acid. Pretty much the only thing they have iin commin with Tolkien Trolls is that they average at 9ft.
Dwarves:
*Only difference between Tolkien & D&D Dwarves is that female D&D Dwarves don't have beards.
Hobbits:
*LotR: Large hairy feet. Reach adulthood at 33, not known for having good looks. Genetically proned to obesity.
*D&D: Reach adulthood in early 20s. Capable of growing facial hair. Don't frown upon adventuring or boating.
