Fangirls & the amazing coincidence.
A month ago I created a LiveJournal group deticated to the Joker, allowing only cartoons & comics & excluding the movies to keep the Ledger fangirls away (seriously, if you ay no one else should ever play the Joker after Ledger, you are NOT a Joker fan, you are a Ledger fan).
Anyway, there was an amazing coincidence occuring: ALL of the members who joined were girls & ALL of them like slash/yaoi/BL/shounenai. I'm not shitting you.
For 10 years, the number of women who get their jollies off on fantasizing that every attractive man in the world is gay has been increasing steadily since I was 15, & that was 10 years ago. It's not suprize that there is actualy an annual convention deticated to women who like guys who like guys: Y-con. So anyone who tells you that men like lesbians but it doesn't work the other way around is full of shit.
Some people would say it's the Japanese culture influence, but no. Before yaoi/bl/shounenai ever touched the lips of Americans & other worldly women, writers like Anne Rice, Poppy Z Brite, & Mary Renault had already piqued young ladies interest in the "two guys is better than one & I'd rather just watch" voyeurism, resulting in a horde of slash fanfiction based on every book, movie, & tv series under the sun.
Ah, but there's the biggest difference between men & women. When men fantasize about lesbians, they want to be part of the action. When women fantasize about gays, they just want to watch & often invite their friends over & they'll eat too.
& now we get to comic books. Comic books stopped being child-friendly aroung the 80s & focused on its adult fan-following, especially so in the 90s, when kids were flocking to manga & manhwa. The amount of female readers is growing, women are slowly inching their way into working for comic companies, though very few become the writers or artists. Since DC comics already has a minimum of three open lesbians, it's about time some of the male characters came out of the closet too. & while they're at it, try adding some new characters that aren't caucasian, tone down on the steroids, stop giving every heroine & villainess implants, & do something about those retarded costumes.
