Castle: Episode 4x01 Rise

I wasn't blown away by the season premier. It's not that it was bad, it's just that it was too dark to be fundamentally Castle, if that makes any sense. I understand that the show had to wrestle with the upheaval that took place during the season finale, but I'm holding my breath until we get back to our zany Castle roots, maybe around episode three, before I judge.

I think I like the way that the episode was handled. Strangely enough, Beckett was my least favorite character. Here I was all prepared to hate the new captain for being an uptight stick in the mud for kicking Castle out. Then Beckett storms in to tell her "Here's how it's gonna be," and the Captain puts her in her place. Booyah! Beckett was being a brat, not a cop, and it's high time someone in this precinct actually played by the rules. After how things played out with Montgomery, I found Captain Gates's Internal Affairs attitude and distrust of cops rather comforting. Because even Castle's little Mayor trick was a little disconcerting. And Ryan's paranoia about getting fired is kind of adorable.

I was pleasantly surprised by Castle's angry reaction to Beckett not calling him for months, mostly because Beckett obviously wasn't expecting it either. It was a great role reversal from last season's premier. For once, Castle was the one in control of their relationship. I was even more surprised that Alexis was mad at her dad for going back to the precinct, but it also made sense.

And then we all found out that Kate's a liar. Wait, we already knew that. Okay, then we found out she lied about hearing Castle say "I <3 U"

So, nothing was a real shocker, nothing really got me excited, or piqued, or upset, but it all made sense. All the reactions seemed realistic, and that's always a good thing. Just not enough.

And then there was that nerdy fangirl moment when I recognized Worf's Michael Dorn's voice. *squee!*
