Castle: Knockdown

OMG YAY! This last episode of Castle was amazing for so many reasons. It pulled everyone out of their routines and shook things up a bit.

I was really happy when Montgomery pulled Kate off the murder investigation for several reasons:
1) It's what a real cop would do. Cops shouldn't work on cases they are personally involved with for the same reason doctors shouldn't operate on family members - their emotions get in the way and they are prone to making major mistakes
2) It shows that Montgomery is a good cop, and he reminds the audience - when he reminds Ryan and Esposito - that it says Captain on his badge. He's fun, but he's authority, and he wears it well.
3) It gave Ryan and Esposito the chance to shine as detectives. They usually sit in Kate's very tall, high-heeled shadow. It was nice to see them take the lead rather than pull reports all day long. Their torture scene was also very well done. They had excellent humor under pressure. Very James Bond.

My next favorite feature was Castle's reaction when the informer got shot in the cafe. When he turned to Kate and said, "When I saw the blood on your shirt, I thought you were shot," his shock and fear was palpable. He's so often silly and lighthearted that it feels incredibly intense when he goes completely serious. I love those moments! It strips away all the ridiculous bravado that he carries around in his bullet proof WRITER vest and reveals his amazing heart and how much he genuinely cares.

I wasn't expecting Martha's reaction to Castle's near-miss with the sniper, but my heart just soared when she told him "How the hell can you ask me something like that? Think about how much you love Alexis, and that is how much I love you, and don't you dare ask me where this is coming from." *sniffle* So awesome! I love that family. They're all very much alike. Fun, silly, a little outrageous, but extremely caring at the core.

Two more points I'd like to mention:

First, Beckett calling Castle "Rick" just before he found a roundabout way to tell her he loves her without starting something that can't be stopped. Kate's last name basis is very much like Castle's version of humor (though she has plenty wit herself). It keeps things fun at a comfortable distance, but when it's dropped, the impact is intense.

Second, the kiss. The kiss was fun. And conveniently set in a non-acting acting setting, thus protecting the existing friendship so the two of them can ignore the consequences for a while. My favorite part was the post kiss "That was amazing!" and Castle's hilarious face-touch as he tries to compose himself before rushing into the warehouse. LOL. I'm still laughing.
