Bert McCracken had been missing for exactly 3 days, 17 hours and 21 minutes when Gerard Way went much the same way, disappearing from his mother’s home in New Jersey. It was 4 weeks and 5 days before they were found alive and well. This is the story of those 33 days spent running from no one and everyone.

----

Gerard hung up the phone and walked back down the hall and into the dining room where his brother was setting out plates for dinner.

Mikey looked up at his brother and saw that the frown that had been creasing his brow for 3 days was still there.

“I take it they’ve had no luck finding him then?” Mikey said.

“Nope. Branden was just calling to let me know that he got a message from Bert saying: ‘Don’t worry’. He then reminded me that Bert likes to play this game and that he usually turns up about the 4th or 5th day,” Gerard sighed, then muttered “Like I didn’t already know that.”

“Pardon?”

“Nothing,” Gerard shook his head “So, what’s for dinner?”

His mother came out of the kitchen. “Lasagne,” she answered.

“Yum...with lots of béchamel sauce, right?”

“Yes.”

Gerard grinned.

----

Thoroughly stuffed with lasagne and salad, Gerard groaned from his just-acquired place on the couch when the doorbell rang and everyone stared at him. He pushed himself back up and out of the seat. He slowly moved down the hall to the door.

He swung it open. His jaw dropped. “Ber-! Mmmph!”

He’d opened the door to find Bert standing on his doorstep. In shock, he’d gone to yell his name and Bert had grabbed him and slapped a hand over his mouth. Luckily for him, the TV was up loud enough that Gerard’s family hadn’t heard him cry out.

“Shh!” he hissed in Gerard’s ear. “I’ll let you go if you promise not to be loud. Deal?”

Gerard nodded. Bert let him go.

“What the fuck are you getting at, Bert?!” the older man hissed quietly. “Running off! Without a word!”

Bert’s shoulders drooped slightly. He sighed, “If I’d said anything, they would’ve stopped me. And....I, I just wanted to run away.”

Gerard relaxed. “I know. But why come here? If you wanted a place to crash for a while, you should’ve called. I could’ve-”

“No. I don’t need someone to crash with. I need someone to run with me.”

“You came to me because you want me to run away with you? Just, drop everything, and run?”

Bert nodded.

“But....” Gerard looked back over his shoulder.

“Not forever,” Bert said. He reached forward, grabbed Gerard’s round face and turned him to him. “Don’t think. Just.... what do you want to do? Right now? Right this second? Will you run with me? Yes, or no?”

Gerard paused for a moment. “Yes.”

Bert smiled.

“But what about clothes?”

Bert shook his head.

“We go now, or not at all. I don’t have anything but the clothes on my back, my wallet and this rental car.”

“Okay... let’s go.” Gerard pulled out of Bert’s grip and grabbed his wallet off the foyer table.

“Gerard?” Mikey’s voice suddenly called out.

Gerard and Bert froze momentarily before starting to move.

“Who’s at the door?”

The two men ran towards the rental car parked by the kerb. They jumped into it and quickly disappeared down the street and out of sight.

----

“Gerard?” Mikey peeked around into the foyer. “Ger.....” he looked at the open door and the lack of his brother and frowned. He went and stood just inside the threshold of the door and peered  outside. The only movement was a cat darting across the road and a car turning the corner a little ways down the street. Quickly, he closed the door and ran downstairs. He checked his brother’s bedroom, but found no sign of him. He ran and checked the kitchen to see if maybe he was there trying to get the remnants of the béchamel sauce from the bottom of the lasagne dish. Again, he didn’t find him. He speedily checked and double-checked the house, but found no trace of his older brother. He walked back into the lounge room with an odd look on his face.

His mother and father looked up at him.

“What’s wrong, Mikey?” his mother asked.

“Gerard’s gone.”

----

Gerard was laughing joyously as he finished buckling himself in. “Oh my god! I can’t believe I just did that!”

Bert grinned at him. “Fun, huh?”

Gerard nodded, “Yeah.” They drove in silence for a moment. “Where are we going, Bert?”

“Oh, didn’t you realize? I’m kidnapping you,” Bert deadpanned. Five seconds later, they both cracked up laughing. “No, but seriously; I’m kidnapping you.” Gerard raised an eyebrow. Bert saw it out of the corner of his eye and giggled. “Nah, we’re going to New York first.”

“New York? Any particular reason?” He started to fiddle with the dials on the radio.

“Stock up on supplies and withdraw some money.” Bert could see Gerard messing with the buttons. “We need to get to.... our accounts....” He was getting slightly distracted by the other man’s insistent fiddling, “before.. they- Would you stop that?!” he finally snapped.

Gerard hit one more button then sat back. “Sorry,” he huffed. “Now, what were you saying?”

Bert scanned around the intersection before proceeding. “We need to get to our money before they - our families that is - get to the accounts and decide to try and... I dunno, freeze ‘em or something.”

“Why would they...... ahh, never mind...” Gerard muttered, pushing back and squirming slightly in his seat to get comfortable.  “So, New York for supplies, money and...?”

“Well, that’s about it really....”

“That’s it... That’s your whole plan.”

“I’m not the sort of guy who has a plan. That’s something you should know better than most, Gerard,” Bert finished softly.

“Yeah...” Gerard replied, equally soft. “So, where to from the City that never sleeps?”

“I dunno,” Bert pressed down on the brake pedal as they approached a red light. It turned green just as they stopped. He hit the accelerator. “I figured, maybe.... just a bit of a road trip... or... something...”

“That sounds good.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”
