This sounds a lot like the feelings of many adopted people, of whom I am one. And while they have at least the possibility of access to their lost heritage, it generally isn't all that, which is one of the reasons I haven't bothered to dig mine up.

It's also very likely that our ancestral cultures had equally repugnant practices whose preservation would not be appreciated, given the evidence of bog bodies.

It's entirely possible. But knowing and choosing to let go of that history, and having no way to know either way, are two entirely different things.

And evidence of bodies may not tell the story we think it does, colored as our interpretation of the evidence is by a historical perspective that was extremely hostile to the practices in question and brings a lot of baggage with it as a result. It's possible those practices would be as repugnant in context as we think of them out of context .. but I wonder what we'd think of them if we knew the context. *That* kind of perspective is what I think we've truly lost beyond any hope of ever finding again.
