Ha-
[Kairi's voice gives out and it's a long moment before she begins again.]
Has anyone found a shell pendant?
I'd like it back please.
[There's a long pause, as though she's going to say more. But she doesn't, and after perhaps half a minute, the audio cuts out.]

There's someone pounding on your door, Kairi.]

She sounds hesitant, her voice thick, like she's still trying to pretend that everything is okay.]
Who is it?

Riku's standing right up close to the door; he rests his head on the door as he answers.]
Kairi, it's me. C'mon, open the door.
[And then, quieter--but she'll still hear it.]
Please?

She's holding it together, just. Her eyes are bright and rimmed red and her face is flushed, but her expression's set. She stands still for a moment, her hand trembling almost imperceptibly on the door's handle. Then she backs away, just far enough to let Riku into the room.
She has no idea what to say.]

He hadn't been there. He hadn't been there to do anything, to protect her. That had always been the most important thing, and here she'd died because he had been off in that temple, off--off playing. He'd known what people on this ship could do. He'd known, even -before- coming to the ship, that a lot of the time bad things happened to people that deserved it the least. He should have known, he should have been there.
And that had been a fatal mistake. For -Kairi-. The worst sort he could have made.
And now she's back and he's hugging her tightly, maybe just to make sure she's really there, and his chest hurts because he's failed her and he's not sure he can forgive himself for it. Or that he wants -her- to.]
Kairi, I'm sorry.

Part of her is afraid that she will.
But Riku's safe and he's here. That counts for something. When he speaks, she pulls back and shakes her head.]
Don't-. You couldn't do anything.
