Just about as happy as I can be

Here is Chapter Two! I wanted to get it up quickly since chapter one was so short.  This one is kind of short too but I swear the chapters will get longer.  So enjoy and don't forget to let me know what you think :-)

She reached her house fifteen minutes later and caught sight of her mother watching for her from the window.  She knew her mother worried about her but she never realized how much until now.  She pulled into the drive way and turned off the engine.  She ran towards the door of the two story house, with grocery bags in tow, not wanting to be drenched by time she got inside.  The door was pulled open from the inside by a petite woman in her mid-fifties with slightly graying brown hair and bright blue eyes.

“Hey Mom, thanks,” the girl said when she entered the house.

“Your welcome Jacquelyn,” she smiled warmly, “I see you took the long way home.”

“Yes I did,” Jacquelyn replied answering her mother’s unasked questions.  Jacquelyn only took the long way home after visiting her brother’s grave.  They put away the few groceries Jacquelyn had picked up at the store while discussing what they should make for dinner.  After they decided on spaghetti, Jacquelyn began to remove the ingredients for the sauce from the mahogany cabinets next to the stove.  The kitchen was silent as they prepared dinner.

Five minutes before the spaghetti was ready Jacquelyn hollered to her sister, “Erin, come help me set the table please!”

“Coming,” Erin replied as she walked into the kitchen.  The seventeen year old began putting the dishes on the table.  Her short, blonde ponytail was moving side to side as she walked back and forth between the table and the cabinets.  Her bluish green eyes sparkled playfully as she smiled from ear to ear.

“What are you so happy about?” Jacquelyn questioned.

“Jake Austin asked me out today,” Erin beamed.

“Who’s Jake Austin?” Erin and Jacquelyn’s father, Justin, asked as he entered the kitchen.

“Well,” Erin began, “he’s a senior, he plays football, basketball, and baseball and he’s the guy I’m going out with tomorrow night”

“Oh, really?”

“Yes, really,” Erin laughed.

“And what are the two of you going to be doing?”

“Dinner and a movie.”

“How cliché,” Jacquelyn piped in.

“Oh, Jacquelyn, leave your sister alone,” her mother said playfully swatting her with the old, blue and green plaid hand towel that was thrown over her shoulder.

“As long as I get to meet him first,” her father said.  Erin rolled her eyes but silently nodded her head.  “That reminds me, Jacquelyn.”

“Yeah Dad,” she said closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, preparing herself for the one question she dreaded every time she came home.

“Do you have a boyfriend?”

“Nope,” she answered briefly hoping to avoid further questions on the boyfriend topic.

“Really, hasn’t it been like two years since you’ve had a boyfriend?  I don’t remember you going that long without a boyfriend since before we let you start dating.”

“Yeah, it has been two years.  No big deal though.” Jacquelyn was trying to think of anyway to change the topic but nothing was coming to mind.  Just as her father was about to ask another question the timer on the stove started to buzz, signaling that dinner was ready.

“Thank goodness,” Jacquelyn muttered under her breath.  She did not want to delve deeper into the reasons she does not have a boyfriend.  Not only would it bring up a range of emotions she had already dealt with once earlier in the day and did not want to face again, but she would have to tell her parents everything that she had been keeping from them for the past two years.  Doing so would only ruin one of her nights at home for Thanksgiving break.  To Jacquelyn’s relief the rest of dinner went smoothly.
