“Hey Bryce,” a female voice hollered. Bryce immediately stepped away from Jason.
“Hey Livie,” Bryce said walking towards the stereo so she could turn it off.
“Who’s this?” Livie asked pointing to Jason. Bryce turned around to answer.
“An old friend. Jason, Livie. Livie, Jason.”
“Hi,” Jason said
“Hey,” Livie replied winking at Jason.
“Bryce are you ready to run those errands?” Jason asked practically begging to leave.
“Yeah, lets go,” Bryce said grabbing her money and her cell phone, “Bye Livie.”
“It was nice meeting you,” Jason said as he and Bryce walked out the door. Bryce and Jason walked silently down the side walk for a couple minutes before Jason finally broke the silence. “What was up with your roommate?”
“What do you mean?” Bryce asked.
“She winked at me,” Jason answered, “it was weird.”
“Oh, that’s just how Livie is she will flirt with anything that can talk.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” Jason asked.
“No, not really,” Bryce said, “you know what?”
“What’s that?” Jason asked.
“It really amazes me how quickly things can go back to how they were.”
“I know what you mean,” Jason answered.
“I’m glad its like that though, “ Bryce said smiling and reaching for Jason’s hand.
“Me too,” Jason said squeezing Bryce’s hand lightly. Bryce and Jason finished running errands with very little conversation between the two of them.
“Finally done,” Bryce said as she and Jason walked out of the last store. “Do you want to go get some lunch?” Bryce asked.
“Sure,” Jason answered, “oh, wait, I don’t have any money.”
“Don’t worry about it, my treat.” Bryce began pulling Jason in the direction of her favorite restaurant. During their lunch, Jason and Bryce talked continuously, but not about anything of importance. After lunch, Bryce and Jason walked to the park near Bryce’s apartment. They found an isolated bench and sat down to talk. “When do you have to leave?” Bryce asked.
“Later tonight,” Jason answered
“Oh, I guess I better start telling you what I want you to know now then.” Bryce said smiling.
“Only if you want to,” Jason said seriously.
“I do want to. It is just kind of hard. So, you wanted to know why I left without saying goodbye or even telling you that I was leaving, right?” Jason simply nodded not wanting to interrupt. “About a week before graduation my cousin called and told us that two of her friends were looking for a third roommate and I decided to move in with them and work until school started. I didn’t tell anyone, not even Hayden, I guess I didn’t want to ruin the last week of school. I’m not exactly sure. I was going to say goodbye, I really was, until the graduation party.” Bryce paused for a while. When she didn’t continue Jason spoke up.
“Why didn’t you say goodbye to me?” Bryce took a few moments to compose herself before answering.
“I didn’t say goodbye to you because when I finally found you at the party you had some blonde hanging all over you and you weren’t doing anything about it besides putting your arm around her.” Bryce said more angrily than she intended.
“Wait, what girl?”
“I don’t know. I walked in saw you talking to RJ and Dan and that girl was all over you so I left.”
“I was taking to RJ and Dan. Where was I?”
“In the backyard.”
“You didn’t check to see who it was?”
“No, I was upset, you know that I immediately thought of what you’re brother did to me.”
“I know, but you shouldn’t have because I’m not my brother and I would never, ever, do anything like that to you. Do you want to know who the girl was?”
“Yes,” Bryce answered quietly.
“It was Meredith, Dan’s cousin. I’ve known her since she was born, she’s 15 now I think.”
“Oh,” Bryce said feeling slightly foolish. Jason noticed this and immediately pulled Bryce into a hug.
“Don’t worry about it. I understand that you thought something was going on between Meredith and I, but you won’t ever have to worry about that. I’m not my brother.”
“I know, I was stupid.”
“No you weren’t stupid, you’re still hurt, and that’s okay.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Me too,” Jason said, “How about we forget about that, it was just a misunderstanding anyway.”
“Okay,” Bryce replied. After Jason realized that Bryce wasn’t continuing to talk he began to speak.
“Have you given any thought to my second question?”
“Yeah, I’ve thought about it a lot.” After sitting on the bench for at least five minutes Jason urged Bryce to continue.
“Tell me what you think.”
“Well, I’m not sure,” Bryce said honestly.
“What are you not sure about?” Jason asked.
“I don’t know if it would work.” Bryce sighed and covered her face as a few tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Is there anything you are sure about?” Jason asked.
“Yes,” Bryce answered simply.
“What’s that?”
“I’m sure that I still want you as my friend and I’m sure that I still have feelings for you. I just don’t know if there is anyway to make it work.”
“Why don’t you think we can make it work?” Jason asked taking hold of Bryce’s hand.
“Because we are living in two different states. We’re going to two different colleges. We would never see each other.”
“I could come visit you some weekends and you could come visit me too, I’m sure your family wouldn’t mind that.” Bryce laughed lightly as she wiped the tears away from her eyes.
“I guess, but I’m still not sure.”
“I know you are scared about what will happen because of Rich. You know I would never cheat on you, ever. If you are still worried we can just see what happens.”
“What do you mean?” Bryce asked confused.
“Well, we can just be friends for the time being. We can catch up and rebuild our friendship. We can visit when we want or talk whenever we need to. Whatever we need to make our friendship better because that’s the most important thing. If we get our friendship worked out I’m sure we can figure out how to handle the dating thing again.”
“Okay,” Bryce answered, “friends again?”
“Definitely.” Jason said giving Bryce a hug. Shortly after that Jason and Bryce left the park and walked back to Bryce’s apartment. They ate a quick dinner then Bryce drove Jason back to his hotel so he could check out and get his things. After the hotel, Bryce drove Jason to the airport. She sat in the terminal with him waiting for his plane to be called. When it was they shared a tearful goodbye. Jason promised to call her when he got home and waved goodbye as he walked out of sight. Bryce headed back to her apartment to finish her homework and to wait to hear from Jason that he made it safely home.
The next couple of months passed quickly for Bryce. Jason had come to visit her twice when he had a long weekend. Bryce had visited him when she went home for a few days for Thanksgiving. Bryce was driving home for Christmas break when her cell phone rang. Bryce pulled over to the side of the road and put the car in park before answering her phone. “Hello”
“Hey Bry”
“What’s up Jase?”
“I just wanted to see when you were coming home”
“I’m on my way right now actually. How about I call you when I get into town?”
“Okay, sounds good. Talk to you later.”
“Bye.” Bryce hung up her phone and pulled back out onto the road. Bryce was still several hours from Detroit so she put in her favorite cd to make the time go faster. 9 hours, 6 cds, 2 bottles of water, 3 rest stops, 2 and a half tanks of gas, and one number 3 from Burger King later Bryce finally arrived home. When Bryce walked into her house Jason was already sitting there. She gave him a tight hug, “Why are you here already, I didn’t call you?”
“Because you didn’t call and I thought you would be home by now.”
“Oh, so you were worried,” Bryce said carrying her stuff towards her room.
“No,” Jason said, “well maybe just a little.” Bryce laughed as she tossed her things on her bed. “Want to go do something?” Jason asked as Bryce collapsed on her bed along with her bags.
“Like what?” Bryce mumbled, “I’m tired.”
“Like making our count down to Christmas calendar,” Jason suggested. Bryce sat up as she spoke.
“I suppose I could handle coloring.”
“Okay, its all over at my house.”
“You can drive,” Bryce said quickly. Bryce and Jason spent the rest of the night making their Christmas calendar, even though there were only 5 days until Christmas Eve which is when they exchange presents. The five days passed quickly because Bryce had to finish her Christmas shopping. She had the hardest time trying to find a gift for Jason. While she was shopping for her mother an idea popped into her head about what she could get Jason for Christmas.
On Christmas Eve Bryce and Jason attended mass with their families and met up afterwards for dinner. After dinner they walked back to Bryce’s house. They went up to Bryce’s room which was lit up with Christmas lights and had various decorations all over. They decided to exchange gifts in Bryce’s room. After arguing over who was going to open their gift first Bryce gave up and told Jason she would open hers. Jason pulled a small box out of his jacket and handed it to Bryce. Bryce looked at the small box and then at Jason before she unwrapped it. When Bryce opened the box she found a small silver bracelet with a charm on it. The charm was a small heart. Bryce gave Jason a hug while telling him, repeatedly, how much she loved the gift. After a few minutes Bryce walked over to her bed and opened up her bag. She pulled out a similarly sized box to the one Jason had given her. She walked back over to Jason and handed him the box. Jason stared at it for a minute or so trying to figure out what was inside. He shook it, but it made no noise. After a few more minutes he decided to just open the box. When he opened the box all that was inside was a small piece of paper. Jason picked up the small piece of paper and unfolded it. Once it was unfolded it read, “Jase, do you know what the best Christmas gift would be?” Jason stared at the paper confused. Finally he said, “what would be the best Christmas gift?” Bryce smiled and draped her arms over Jason’s shoulders.
“The best Christmas gift would be being able to say that I am going out with the sweetest, kindest, and best guy ever.” Bryce kissed him gently and then pulled back to wait for his response. After a few moments without Jason saying anything Bryce said, “Jase?” Jason just smiled.
“Yes, that would be the best Christmas gift, especially since it means I could say I’m dating the sweetest, kindest, and most amazing girl.” Jason kissed Bryce softly before hugging her. “I have to go home since its late but I will call you tomorrow, okay?”
“Okay.” Bryce said letting go of Jason. Jason was walking out of Bryce’s bedroom when she said,
“Jase, I’m glad things are back to how they were.”
“Me too, night”
“Night,” Bryce said as she watched Jason leave. Then she climbed into her bed and fell asleep quickly. Bryce was finally completely happy and she knew that she could forget about the past and focus on her future with Jason.
