You Never Know
"Are you ready?" my mom hollered
"Why do I have to go to Kyle's baseball game?" Kyle is my older brother. He's 4 years older than me. I turn 10 on September 30th, which is in one month. Kyle plays for the Babe Ruth league
"Because it’s the championship game and he went to all your soccer games"
"Fine" I said shutting of my Saturday morning cartoons "why are we leaving so early this week?"
"Because the group that is going to sing the national anthem is singing some of their own songs before the game"
"Oh would I know who they are?"
"I don't think so, they're from Tulsa"
"Oh, how far away is Tulsa?"
"Umm about 20 minutes"
"Oh okay" We all piled into my dad's 93 Pontiac sunfire and drove to the ball park. It was about a 10 minute drive from our house. We got there at 10:30, the group wasn't supposed to start singing until 11, well at least that was what I heard from Kyle's teammates' parents' conversations. I also found out that the group was 3 brothers and apparently one of them was my age. I played with some of the other kids until I heard someone start to play a song. I ran over to the fence that separated the field from the bleachers. I noticed that in the center of the field were 3 people. The one who appeared to be the oldest had a guitar slung over his shoulder. The youngest was sitting behind the drums and the other one was standing next to the keyboards. After a few minutes the keyboard player introduced the band as Hanson, and then he said that his name was Taylor and his older brother's name is Isaac and his younger brother's name is Zac. They played 4 songs before they sang the national anthem. They removed their instruments from the field and I watched them walk to the parking lot. I was hungry so I ran over to my mom and asked her for money so I could get lunch. I bought a hotdog, French fries and a vanilla milkshake. There was only one picnic table that wasn't full. I sat down and started to eat by myself. I started to hum one of the songs Hanson played to myself
"Hey that’s a good song" someone said. I tried to look up to see who it was but the sun was right behind them so I couldn't tell
"Uh thanks"
"Do you mind if I sit here" the person said "all the other tables are full and you look like the only person my age" he added quickly
"Sure" he sat down across from me
"Hi I'm Zac"
"I'm Lydie" I was kind of surprised that they were staying for the game but I didn't say anything "you're the drummer in the band right?"
"Yeah" he glanced around and then started to wave. Then his brothers walked over to the table with food and sat down as well "guys this is Lydie, Lydie these are my brothers Tay and Ike"
"Hi" I said
"Hey"
"Hey"
"Your songs are really good"
"Thanks" they said at the same time which made me laugh. We talked while we ate. When I finished I got up and said
"I have to go watch some of my brother's game but maybe I'll see you later"
"Bye" they all said as I headed back to the field. I was standing by the fence in the bottom of the 9th inning when Zac walked up to me "hey Lydie"
"Hey Zac"
"I had fun talking to you earlier"
"Me too"
"Do you live near Tulsa?"
"Sort of I live like 20 minutes away"
"That’s not that far, we should hang out sometime"
"Yeah" I paused for a second "come here" I grabbed Zac's hand and ran over to where my mom was sitting. "Mom this is Zac"
"Hi Zac"
"Hi"
"Do you have a piece of paper and a pen?" I asked
"Yeah" she dug through her purse and pulled out a crumpled up piece of paper and a pencil. I ripped the paper in half and wrote my phone number on it. Then I handed it along with the pencil to Zac. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. I handed it to my mom and we ran off to play on the jungle gym because the game was headed into extra innings
~25 years later~
"Mom, why do I have to go to Mike's game?" my 10 year old daughter, Amanda, hollered
"Because he's your brother"
"Why are we going to the park early, his game doesn't start until 12"
"There is a band singing a couple of songs before they sing the national anthem" I laughed a little bit as Zac walked into the room. He gave me a hug and a kiss. He put his arm around me and I put my head on his shoulder
"Why do I have to go" Amanda whined
"Because you never know who you might meet and become friends with plus your brother is playing" Zac said. I looked up at him and smiled knowing he was thinking of how we met
"Fine! I'll go" Amanda said
"Okay why don't you go get Mike and get in the car" After she left I put my arms around Zac's neck and kissed him. Then Mike popped his head into the room
"Mom, Dad lets go I'm going to be late"
"Okay we're coming" I said as I laced my fingers with Zac's and we walked out to the car.
