The drive to Drew’s house was silent. Both Drew and Jacquelyn were caught up in their own thoughts. Jacquelyn yawned as she pulled into Drew’s driveway. Drew glanced at the clock, it was quarter of twelve.
“Jac, why don’t you stay over? It’s late and you’re tired.”
“I am not,” Jacquelyn replied fighting another yawn.
“Yeah right,” Drew said skeptically reaching for her phone. He dialed the number to Jacquelyn’s house and left a message on the answering machine stating that Jacquelyn was spending the night. “Now you can stay and you’re parents won’t be worried.”
“Fine,” Jacquelyn sighed before turning off her car. “I don’t have anything to sleep in though.”
“Since when has that ever been a problem?” Drew questioned.
“Good point,” she replied following Drew into his house. The pair walked upstairs quietly as not to disturb Drew’s parents and younger brother. Jacquelyn turned on the light after walking into Drew’s bedroom and shutting the door. Drew had pulled out a pair of shorts and a t-shirt for Jacquelyn to wear to bed. He then left the room to allow Jacquelyn to change while he brushed his teeth and changed as well.
Jacquelyn was sitting in the chair next to Drew’s desk when he returned. Drew tossed his clothes on the floor before climbing into bed.
“Are you coming?” He asked when she didn’t move towards his bed.
“I suppose,” she said turning off the light before climbing under the comforter with Drew. “Night Drew,” Jacquelyn said before settling into Drew’s bed.
“Goodnight Jac,” Drew said before rolling over to face the wall. Jacquelyn fell asleep within five minutes while Drew was having difficulty sleeping. He rolled over again, noticing Jacquelyn was asleep he lightly kissed her forehead like he did every time she spent the night. Drew fell asleep several minutes later with his arm protectively draped over Jacquelyn.
The next morning Jacquelyn was woken up by the sunlight slipping between the blinds on the window. She quietly slid out from under Drew’s comforter and arm. The clock on the desk read eleven a.m. Jacquelyn knew if she wasn’t home soon her parents would begin to worry, even though they knew she spent the night at Drew’s house. She quickly searched for a piece of paper and pen. When she found them she quickly wrote Drew a note and left it on his desk. Jacquelyn picked up her clothes before exiting Drew’s room and going to her car.
“Hey Mom, I’m home,” Jacquelyn yelled as she entered her house through the garage door.
“Okay Jac,” her mother replied from the laundry room. Jacquelyn shook her head and smiled, even on days when her mom did not have to teach she was always doing work. Jacquelyn walked into the laundry room,
“Mom, I’ll do that.”
“No, it’s okay,” Mrs. Taylor replied turning to face her daughter. “Why don’t you go shower? Then I can throw Drew’s clothes into the wash too.”
“Okay,” she replied tossing her clothes from the previous day into the hamper before leaving the room.
“Oh, Jac.”
“Yes Mom?” Jacquelyn responded as she peered around the door.
“Thanks for having Drew call last night, I really appreciate it.”
“It’s no problem,” Jacquelyn assured her mother.
Jacquelyn entered her bathroom and immediately turned on the fan. She started the shower then brushed her teeth allowing time for the water to heat up. When the water was warm enough for her, Jacquelyn stepped into the shower. She stood there letting the water soak into her hair while she attempted to clear her head. When her hair was saturated, Jacquelyn picked up her coconut shampoo and proceeded to wash her hair. Jacquelyn stepped out of the shower a half hour later. She quickly dried off and wrapped the soft, lime green towel around herself before exiting the bathroom. Jacquelyn took the next hour getting ready. Following that she started the last load of laundry for her mother. She then made herself and her mother peanut butter and fluff sandwiches for lunch. They ate lunch while watching The Price Is Right, like they did whenever they had a day off from school.
