[Title] I Try (But it Shows)
[Fandom] Uncharted
[Characters] Chloe Frazer
[Rating] G
[Genre] Angst, Gen
[Word Count] 218
[Summary] Chloe wants to just talk to Nathan, to apologize, but he's begun to shut her out.
[Author's Note] Written for my friend Zoe, because we always aim to break each other's hearts.

Her hands hold tightly to the phone, knuckles white, fingers trembling slightly, waiting for the tone. He doesn’t answer. He hasn’t in days. “I try,” she says softly into the mouthpiece several long moments after his voicemail picks up.

She tries. Yes, she tries hard. She tries to be strong. She tries to be patient. She tries to stay out of the way and not be that girl who holds him back and makes him feel guilty for wanting to be happy. She tries to smile like nothing hurts.

But the truth is, it does hurt. He left her seven years ago, but the part that hurt most was that he gave no reason.

He gave her reason to hope again, to see potential with him again, and then left her again. This time, with an explanation, and that hurt, too.

Even if they aren’t lovers anymore, they’re still friends, but he’s started to shut her out. And what hurts most of all is that she knows her mask is breaking, but that he’s been able to see through it this whole time.

She tries hard to hide the hurt, so very hard.

But it still shows.

When the time on the voicemail runs out and asks if she would like to re-record her message, she hangs up.
