This year, a single flaming pumpkin wasn't enough. So, I did three. ^_^
Interesting, no? :D
In the center, of course, is my traditional kerosene-fueled pumpkin.
Except this year, it was using a paper towel roll, instead of a toilet paper roll. I found it gave a much broader, but less high flame than last year's toilet-paper rolls.
On the one side, we had this
This pumpkin was fueled by methanol (wood alcohol). Ordinarily, methanol burns with a faint blue flame. The beautiful red-orange color was made by dissolving Lithium Chloride (LiCl) in the methanol.
Then there's the other side.
This is also a methanol flame. Only in this one, I'd dissolved Boric Acid (H3BO3). This forms an intermediate compound of Methyl Borate, which colors a flame bright green.
^_^
Note that the methanol flames aren't nearly as high as the kerosene flame. That's because methanol is a lot more volatile than kerosene, and burns hotter and faster. So, the flames couldn't reach very high before the vapor had completely burned.
And yes, these pumpkins were Jonny approved.
