Random Tidbits from the last week or so:
So, I met Anne Bishop, author of my beloved Black Jewels series. Found a neat article in the days leading up to it that I thought gave a
really insightful review of the books. Also, she was delightful and friendly, as was Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Jacqueline Carey, as per usual. I am working my way through Shadow of the Wind, and joining me on the airplane this week will be
Naamah’s Kiss (up next year - Namah’s Curse! I think the third should be entitled Naamah’s Blessing). Also, I would love to suggest a book of short stories about the Companion’s - Camael’s Sword, Anael’s Tree, Eisheth’s Womb, etc. etc. Or maybe I should start writing fan fic?
The only author signing I didn’t make it to recently (that I was planning on) was the
Pride & Prejudice & Zombies one, due to my grandmother passing away and my dad making an emergency flight into town overnight.
For Father’s Day and my dad’s Birthday, which are both in June, I ordered him a set of
Green Cones (watch out, that’s a PDF) for composting to encourage him and my mom to compost their food scraps and stuff. Now, if only the damn things would get DELIVERED already (it’s been 2 weeks, how long is this really supposed to take?!). I tried to have them ready to take to Wenatchee last weekend, but alas. Did not happen.
When I go to Chicago at the end of the month, I want to stop by
Vosges Chocolate, which has a boutique in the airport. I am in love with their Barcelona Bar, and I might get some to send to Spain (I have family just outside of Barcelona), and a
Sugar-Free one for my dad, who is diabetic. One of their few sugarless ones, I might point out. NOM NOM NOM.
Hey, if you ever want to come visit me in West Seattle, here’s a list of
tasty places that we can go to eat!
This month I have the following on the schedule:
EPIC 4th of July Party in La Conner - CHECK!
Family reunion for my grandmother’s burial and touristing it up around Washington D.C. - THIS WEEKEND

Ockham’s Razor at the Scottish Highland Clan Gathering & Games (Friday) and Shakespeare in the Park - FOLLOWING WEEKEND
Sigma Alpha Iota National Triennial Convention in Chicago - LAST WEEKEND

Oooh, look! Here come the Memes!
FOOD MEME
Yoinked from The Goode Wytch Sarah
What's the last thing you ate?
Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds with fat-free milk, and Constant Comment tea with a Splenda and a Raw Sugar packet each. Breakfast of Champions!
What's your favorite cheese?
I LOVE CHEEEEEEESE. Anything that’s not too stinky (limburger?) or chunky (ricotta, cottage). So cheddar, Colby/jack, mozzarella, brie, Neufchatel, Swiss are staples.
What's your favorite fish?
Anything not too “fishy.” Salmon can get hit or miss, but I love it smoked. Halibut is good for absorbing other flavors. No sole, ever. And I’m assuming this question is not asking about crustaceans or bivalves, because I tend to love those as well!
What's your favorite fruit?
Growing up it was strawberries and Lambert cherries. Now, while I still enjoy those, it’s Muscat grapes, Royal Rainier cherries, pomegranates, satsumas, blueberries and watermelon at the moment… I’d like apples more if I wasn’t allergic to their skin.
When, if ever, did you start liking olives?
Olives and I are in the midst of a lifelong passionate love affair.
When, if ever, did you start liking beer?
Late into college - I didn’t like it growing up, and didn’t like the nasty cheap stuff served at frat parties to get girls drunk’n’easy. But a great local microbrew with fascinating ingredients - yes, please!
When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?
Ah, the shellfish question. LOVE THEM. Crab and Lobster are always yummy with me, clams and mussels I’m more particular about, and I adore shrimp.
What was the best thing your parent/s used to make?
It is TOO HARD to pick just one! My mom was a caterer for 10 years, and was an excellent cook before that, and my dad learned to be a good cook with totally random ingredients when he was raising his boys before he was with my mom. I suppose the most memorable (as in, throw a FIT if we don’t have them at the traditional, right and proper times) would be my mother’s Christmas Cookies and my father’s Sausage Gravy.
What's the native specialty of your home town?
Wenatchee does produce "world-famous" apples and cherries. A nearby town turns them into
Aplets & Cotlets, a variation on Turkish Delight. So, maybe those, I guess?
What's your comfort food?
Pizza, wine, Häagen-Dazs ice cream.
What's your favorite type of chocolate?
Dark, preferably, but see above for a recent discovery of Vosges Barcelona Chocolate, which is milk.
How do you like your steak?
Medium well.
How do you like your burger?
With bacon and cheese and other delicious fattening things!
How do you like your eggs?
Fried, slightly runny, with buttered toast to sop. I’m also not adverse to omelettes, scrambled or poached (with the aforementioned Sausage Gravy). And I like MY eggs unfertilized at the moment. :D
How do you like your potatoes?
Roasted well-seasoned wedges
How do you take your coffee?
I don’t. Coffee is not my bag, baby.
How do you take your tea?
No milk or lemon, definitely sweetened. Preferably spicy, like Good Earth Sweet & Spicy or Market Spice.
What's your favorite mug?
Mug… to drink from? Probably my black "Cake or Death?" from the Eddie Izzard show last year.
Or Mug… as in beer? I like Hefeweizens or Mac’n’Jack’s on tap for general beers (on tap is ALWAYS preferable to bottled). The resident offerings at a local pub - it depends!
What's your cookie of choice?
Loaded (the McK cookie is the best example) - chocolate chips, coconut, macadamia nuts. TOTALLY FAT FREE, right?
What's your ideal breakfast?
Toasted whole-grain bread with butter, something cheesey and eggy, tea, bacon, fresh seasonal fruit.
What's your ideal sandwich?
Lately, a lot of Grilled Cheese goin’ on. My usual sandwich for work (when I remember/have the time) is toasted whole-grain bread, lettuce, turkey slices, one slice cheese, spicy mustard and a Laughing Cow wedge.
What's your ideal pizza?
Pepperoni, with variations of black olives and green peppers. Or, if it’s Pagliacci, possibly their seasonal offerings - I’m a big fan of prosciutto and basil and things.
What's your ideal pie?
Coconut cream, cheesecake, anything light and creamy.
What's your ideal salad?
Ones made with red-leaf lettuce or spinach. Depends on the rest of the toppings, and I’m not going to wax on about those right here.
What food do you always like to have in the fridge?
Cheese(s), milk, salsa, naan or tortillas, turkey, lettuce and spinach, produce. Various other things as desired (I went through a yogurt kick a while back that has since faded).
What food do you always like to have in the freezer?
Lean Pockets (Pepperoni), Alexia Oven-Reds, Pubhouse Battered Fish fillets, homemade soup and chili, my mom’s applesauce. Sometimes Lean Cuisines, if I can get them on sale.
What food do you always like to have in the cupboard?
Peanut butter, honey, crackers, tea, butternut squash soup, canned green beans, pasta and lentils.
What spices can you not live without?
Pepper (regular, garlic, lavender), Oregano flakes, Basil, Sage, Red Pepper (ground), Coriander
What sauces can you not live without?
Sun-dried Tomato Alfredo, my mom’s Marinara and Pesto sauces
Where do you buy most of your food?
Thriftway, Metro Market, Safeway, Tony’s Fresh Produce stand (when in season)
How often do you go food shopping?
Hopefully only once a week - I feel like I eat out too much to justify more than that as it is! Sometimes I don’t go for several weeks and then buy that many weeks worth of groceries. Whups.
What's the most you've spent on a single food item?
Probably $8 fruit like Rainier Cherries or Muscat Grapes. Otherwise, no idea.
What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen?
Some of those Coke glasses from McDonald’s (you can just buy the glasses without the food). My parents had ones like that growing up, so it was a bit of nostalgia for me. My last major gift for my kitchen was a KitchenAid Mixer from my parents at Christmas that I can’t use because my outlets aren’t grounded (STUPID APARTMENT).
What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without?
About 95% of it. There’s a few things I don’t use OFTEN, but I would be full of SADFACE if I didn’t have it when I needed it!
How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients?
With my schedule lately, about once or twice a week. I honestly have no recollection of how, what, or where I’ve eaten lately.
What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients?
Last week - pork loins with an orange-clove sauce.
What's your favorite thing to make for yourself?
Fish’n’chips, grilled cheese, lentil soup, pasta with veggies and sun-dried alfredo sauce
What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig, chicken and turkey?
Lamb, goat, rabbit, deer
What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor?
Depends on when the last time I vacuumed. OH SHUSHY, don’t judge me!
What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild?
I don’t think I’ve ever PICKED anything in the wild!
