The Great Apartment Hunt 2K7 continues:
* I have noticed that 95% of people do not call back, even to tell you "fuck off, someone else got the unit." Is a simple acknowledgement of my time and effort to contact YOU so much to ask for? It's just rude, people. It's a microcosm of what's wrong with the world today - people have no manners anymore.
* I've posted, for the 3rd or 4th time, my housing wanted ad on Craigslist. If anyone knows of anything available, here's what I'm looking for:
Ashley Needs a Home! * I do have some prospects:
A fourplex near the West Seattle Junction:
Cute with hardwood floors, no dishwasher - Pros: very residential area, landlord takes care of the grounds, basement storage, cute yet somewhat kitchy look (reminds me a bit of UPS campus housing), allows for a dog, washer/dryer hookups in basement (I can get a washer free from a coworker, might have to get the dryer off of Craigslist)
- Cons: No dishwasher, one of the residents I met yesterday said landlords are not quick at ALL about responding to maintenance calls, and what am I going to do with a washer/dryer when I want to leave?
Okay, so here's what I found at the place today, marked by +'s and -'s for pro's/con's.
+ It's available immediately for move-in.
+ There is in fact washer/dryer already installed in the basement. Not the newest models, nor is the heating, but they are there.
+ The property manager said that they would consider a dishwasher installation when I dropped the fact that I could get a discount through my employment.
+/-It has a funny smell, just really OLD, needs to be cleaned, and he said if I wanted they could have a maintenance guy come in and repaint, etc. The windows are smudgy, the cabinets need to be repapered.
- The bathroom is TINY. SO TINY. Not quite as tiny as my homestay's in London, but throw a tub in there and you've just about got it. WHERE IS MY MAKEUP GOING TO GO!?!? There only place for shelving in the bathroom would be over the commode.
- Not huge closets, but adequate, especially since there is storage downstairs I don't need to keep everything upstairs.
+ Front room is decently sized, I think my stuff would fit, and the bedroom is about the same size as my current one.
So I went ahead and picked up an application, if I decide to go for it. I need to think about this one. There's some good things to it... but it needs a serious feng shui cleaning or something. My gut instinct on this one is registering a "meh" feeling - it's not bad, it's not phenomenal, but I need to keep in perspective that I wasn't really thrilled with my current place when I first saw it either. I just feel like I can find better.
An apartment up on 35th in West Seattle:
Ideal area, no dogs - Pros: very close location, residential area behind it (away from the busy 35th St.), across the street from a Mars Hill Church as opposed to Chuck & Sally's Tavern, has great amenities like secured access, secured parking garage, laundry on every floor, dishwasher, balconey.
- Cons: does not allow dogs, so no potential for getting a furry friend soon (although it does allow for cats, if I want to get allergy shots, yikes), property management has issues returning a damn phone call. BUT they finally did. Possible availablity after August 10th! This place is nice enough that if I can reach an agreement with them, I think I would wait till August... not that I've actually seen it yet or anything.
