The Parentals have come and gone, and it was overall a marvelous weekend! Especially the food part of it - we had fantastic food all weekend!
Friday night, after they arrived, we had red-curry chicken, which was so easy. Saute chicken. Add red curry (it comes in a can, I've only ever seen it at the Thriftway, and has pumpkin and kaffir lime leaves and basil and many other tasty things in it. Make rice. Combine and serve! Mom and Dad just raved about it, and said they were impressed. With it we had "Mad Housewife" wine, the cabernet sauvignon. Just for kicks.
Saturday, we tried out The Husky Deli for lunch, as we were in "downtown" West Seattle (it looks a lot like downtown Wenatchee). The deli was amazing, and there is ice cream, a chocolates case, a cold salad case and sandwiches, either made to order or from their menu (all made while you wait). The food was fantastic, and the grocery aspect of the deli was fabulous too - they even have little jars of English Clotted Cream! Must remember for Tea Party.
Then we went downtown to see 12 Angry Men. The traffic was absolutely hellish - the viaduct was closed and damn near everyone in Seattle was sitting in traffic. It took us a full hour to get there, and it was just a really good thing the play didn't start EXACTLY on time. But we did have a few extra minutes, and it turned out that our neighbor in the next seat was from Wenatchee! He used to be a sports writer for The Wenatchee World! What an amazingly small world! :D
Then we came home after navigating downtown traffic (it was pretty bad too), and swung into Costco for one of their seasoned roasted whole chickens. They're $5, and falling off the bone they are so tender. Mom and Dad had offered to bring one over for Friday but I said "ummm, we DO have Costco here... you know." So we had that with roasted potates (olive oil, parmesan and garlic) that comes in a package in the freezer aisle (apparently they can't get them in Wenatchee), and salad and a Rose wine. Another excellent meal! So easy! And the chicken will make at least another meal, plus some for chicken salad.
We tried to watch The Lake House, but they were snoring 15 minutes into it... so I went to bed at 9:30, haha.
Then today, we had brunch at Tilth, a certified organic restaurant in Wallingford, which was reviewed in one of my foodie magazines. This was truly stupendous! Mom had the wild mushroom quiche, which nearly melted in your mouth and served with some side greens with the most amazingly delicate sauce... it wasn't hardly there, but just enough so that you truly tasted how good lettuce can be, without being distracted. "Enhanced" is the word I would call it. Dad had the spicy pork belly omelette, and it was also mouth-watering. Not so spicy it hurt, but was this fabulously complex combinations of seasonings that was wonderful. I had the chef's brunch special, which was French toast (and each slice was nearly 2" thick!), but was dipped in a creme brulee mixture instead of egg batter, then topped with Grand Marnier, a few oranges slices and creme fraiche. Fabulous. And very sweet! I had apple cider to start, and you could taste just how fresh it was, none of this "concentrate" nonsense. For my 2nd drink, I had to try their lavender soda (because, well, it's me... and it was lavender!). Very delicate, almost like a flavored seltzer water. My parents loved the coffee (Coffee Vita), and had like 4 cups each! I will go back with anyone who wants to try this, hopefully many, many times, and it's not terribly expensive... this all came to about $15 a person. I've had many a worse meal for more! The quality of the food is SO worth it!!
And so, now that I've made myself hungry again, I'm going to retire to the couch with Depts of Madness by Erik Scott de Bie, and begin the adventures of Fox-at-Twilight (when I was trying to explain the books to my parents, my dad who doesn't hear very well, thought I said "Faucet Toilet!").
Oh yes, and it's fabulously sunny outside, and my momma bought me some pansies and got them into my little stone-basket planter for me! Happy Spring!
