Letter delivered by courier to Honoria Lady Delgardie, dated 11 September 1942...

Carefully warded and sealed:

8 septembre 1942

Tante Honoria,

Please be kind to my courier as his travel has been long and hard down the least straight of the old straight tracks, which are besieged, as is the Ile d'Arz, where I reside among family behind the mists. I have not betrayed you, though I know that there are many who believe I have; I am also not dead. The woman who betrayed my parents was persuaded to take my place. I do not know what has become of her, but I believe that she and Yann have died. Yann I will mourn.

I remain deep behind the mists and I will not be seen without them until it is safe to return to my home. I cannot live comfortably so far from the source of my power as your son and his leman insisted I do. I believe it is safer for me if those who believe me dead continue to do so, and so I do trust you will keep my secret. But the Irish queen Aisling sends couriers to my family, and somehow knows that I live; she demands that I surrender myself for my brother's sake. I thought I had entrusted Claudien to you, so I prevail upon you and your son; if Claudien is in Eire, you must keep your word to me and remove him to safety.

By these seals you must know me, or if you do not, then my cousin Séverine, if she lives, will do. I believe queen Dracaena will also, but I would prefer she not know, and the same to my betrothed, who loves the Italian boy; I will not call on him, for I do not believe he can love me.
