I AM IN NO WAY A TASTE AFICIONADO

Case in point: I am a legitimate supporter of the North American dubstep/brostep/moombahton/antigenre movement. Call him shit all you want, I think Skrillex had a good point in that Electronic isn't a genre, it's a platform. I know fuckall about actual music (and thus my opinion is valid or invalid as you want) but I really like the grassroots sort ( Read more... )

okay.

That's just a problem re: labelling more than anything else. I could go into a whole rant about human need to label shit vs the musical reality of what's out there right now. Yeah, a lot of what Skrillex makes isn't dubstep. He never claims as such; people are labelling 'brostep' and 'glitchstep' all that shit but what it boils down to is the emphasis on the first and third beats, the bass drop (from its dnb roots I'm assuming), the subbass... whatever.

Mainstream /= stupid. Selling out is what makes it stupid. Selling out is when you go against your own moral code to please the masses. The grand majority of artists I listen to are just doing what they love.

There are a lot of shit dubstep artists now just like there were a lot of shit dubstep artists then. The genre's grown and there are, of course, tons of purists. Personally I LOVE the variety the genre has now; you get the melodic riffy rock-inspired people like Skrillex, the almost industrial/metal of people like Excision, the Hip-Hop guys like Datsik, and the weird glitchy people like Feed Me. Not to mention mainstays like Flux Pavillion/Doctor P and Skream and Benga and all that shit... It's really nice.

lol ephixa he was cool live. played before zedd/porter robinson/skrillex when I went to see them in waterloo.

i wasn't super deep into the genre or anything, i just browse youtube a lot and i find that whenever tweens get into something it produces a lot of misconceptions and ignorance and eventually deconstructs the culture, like how people felt when 'emo' became a stupid 13 year old term instead of a genuine brand of music or w/e

but i actually don't know a whole lot about this kind of thing and i won't act like am a pretentious music meister or anything

i just hate youtube tweens

maybe that's the source of my disappointment

the only song i think i've even heard by skrillex was him saying his name over and over, i didn't really get it.

LOL OH GOD MY NAME IS SKRILLEX The best part of that is the fact that there is literally a song that reads like this on iTunes:

My Name is Skrillex (Skrillex Remix) on the My Name is Skrillex EP

I DIE every time I see it.

The youtube dubstep community is dumb but every community on youtube is dumb.

Skrillex is fun... he's one of my favourite artists for his musical ability + his actual personality. The thing about him is that be bounces around genres so much that if you don't like one song of his you're probably gonna find another that you love. If you wanna check him out, uh, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites is kind of his trademark song. That and Equinox (First of the Year)... same with his remix of Benny Benassi's Cinema, which is more popular than the actual song. Oh, and With You Friends (Long Drive) is a nice piano-driven thing. And the two versions of Ruffneck, Flex and Full Flex. I JUST LIKE EVERYTHING He hasn't really disappointed me yet.

whoop I just skrillexed all over the place sorry
