So...has anyone ever had sleep paralysis?

"the sense of being aware that one is unable to move or speak while falling asleep or waking up"

It's happened to me like 3 times in the last year, and it is like the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. I finally looked it up on wikipedia and it's a little comforting to know that it happens to a lot of other people I guess, but...

"In Chinese folk culture, sleep paralysis is referred as "gǔi yà chúang" literally: "Ghost press bed". The belief is that a spirit or ghost is sitting or lying on top of the sleeping individual, causing the sleep paralysis."
"In Laotian culture, it is called "pee um" translated as "ghost silencing you". The ghost or spirit is thought to visit you in the night, hold your arms and legs down, and even cover your mouth up so that no sound would come out when you scream."

The first time, I was lying on my side, starting to fall asleep. All of a sudden I started to hear voices talking about how they were waiting for me to fall asleep. I couldn't breathe and I felt like the black was starting to close in on me, like I was about to lose consciousness. I got this overwhelming sense that an evil presence was trying to take over my body. My pillow took up like half of my field of vision, so I couldn't see much, but I was intensely scared of seeing the things that were trying to get me.

The second time was even scarier, because it happened as I was starting to wake up. I felt a sense of panic in my dream, like it was about to turn bad very quickly. I immediately felt myself being pulled out of the dream, and I was back in my bed. I couldn't move and I was staring towards my window.I saw a girl (think "the Ring") next to me, standing as though the bottom half of her went through my bed. Again with the extremely evil presence. You kind of feel like you're going to die, except much worse. Like...you fear for your soul. I heard this loud rushing sound, like the blood pounding in my head. I felt like I started to blink and couldn't stop blinking, like a seizure or something.

The latest happened to me this morning. It was the least intense, I think. I woke up and was starting to go back to sleep when I felt the same wave of unconsciousness. It's like you're falling but if you let yourself fall you'll never wake up. I heard voices again but this time the presence was...female? It doesn't really make sense but it felt like it. I couldn't understand what the voices were saying this time, it was more like loud background chatter. It was also a little less distressing I guess because I was on my back so I could see more. All I could think about doing was trying to move, do anything. You feel like you're getting really tired but this intense fear keeps you from stopping. As I started to pull myself out of it, I felt all relieved and tried to rest, and then it started to happen again. So I started breathing really hard and this helped to wake me up and i fell out of bed to keep it from happening again :P

I think I kind of remember this happening when I was a kid, too. I remember lying awake in my parents' room not being able to move, but seeing this geometric shape bouncing around. It was mildly threatening I guess, and I lot less intense than now.

Wikipedia says that these bouts aren't harmful but people describe them as,
"The greatest primal terrors that I have ever witnessed: Character forming stuff - I can't imagine anything in reality that could cause greater fear than these episodes.
There are not words strong enough to describe the horrific fear I felt (feel). "

People have even felt like they were getting raped.
At least I haven't, I guess. I never want to experience this again.

lol...I just finished reading about and writing this when Lisa called. I jumped about a foot in the air.
