[Hermione Meets 10]"So you're... magic?" the Doctor - of what?, Hermione wasn't sure - asked, eyebrows raised impossibly high.

Hermione crouched a little lower behind the half-wall, her hand tightening on her wand. She didn't have a good angle on the two creatures that had stormed in and attacked their her house, not unless she wanted to blast away the wall between the den and the kitchen and bury them under the rubble.

"Interesting," the Doctor said. "But are you sure you're not, say, an alien? Or maybe you're just a run-off-the-mill human who found some interesting advanced tech!"

"No tech," Hermione said, head inching towards the top of the wall. A beam of red light shot towards her, singing the hair on top of her head and hitting the cosy little settee in the corner of the den. It burst into flames and Hermione flicked her wand at it to smother the flames before her whole house caught fire.

"Right," the Doctor said, chancing a quick glance over the top of the wall himself. "So that thing in your hand is no kind of technology. Not at all sonic." He pulled a strange-looking bulky sort of pen from his pocket. "May I?"

Without waiting for a response, he ran the tip of his strange pen along length of Hermione's wand.

The Doctor's face fell. "It's just wood!" He sounded almost offended.

"Of course it's wood!" Hermione snapped. "It's a magic wand, what did you think it was made of?!"

"You're a witch!" He beamed at her. "That's fantastic!" He grimaced. "Whoa, flashback from another life."

Hermione took a controlled breath, and another, and decided that she was done. Done with this spikey-haired stranger and his mysterious appearance. Done with the two hairy beast with - Merlin help her - laser guns. Done with watching more and more of her house getting set on fire. "All right, that's it." She stood and, in one fluid movement, sent her strongest bombarda at the wall the two creatures were using as cover.

The wall collapsed with a mighty crash, sending a cloud of dust and a spray of debris into the air. Hermione quickly send a strengthening spell at the ceiling and the other walls.

"Well," the Doctor said form behind her, "that's one way of doing it." He walked over to the two downed creatures and toed at the arm of one of them. "Out like a light." He lifted a piece of wall off the creature. "But they're definitely my sort; nothing to do with magic at all. I'll get these out of your, uh, hair."

Hermione raised an unimpressed eyebrow at him, but surreptitiously turned her wand on herself to fix the mess her hair was sure to be.

She watched the Doctor struggle for a moment to pick up even one of the creatures before she stepped forward. "Here, let me." She levitated both creatures and then followed the Doctor down to the bottom of the garden to a blue police box, just on the other side of the hedge, that definitely hadn't been there this morning.

"Come on in," the Doctor said, holding the door for her. She floated the two creatures inside. The Doctor followed her, bouncing a little on his feet. He gave her an expectant look.

Hermione raised an eyebrow.

The Doctor made a disgruntled sound. "I must be having an off day. People are usually more impressed with the TARDIS, you know, since it's bigger on the inside."

"Well, most people are Muggles and don't live in houses that are bigger on the inside."

"Your house?"

Hermione nodded.

"I hadn't noticed."

"You weren't supposed to."

[continued]He grinned. "Come with me."

Hermione took a step back. "What?"

"Come with me," the Doctor repeated. "Never had a magic companion before - it's bound to be fun. And I'm sure you'll love it! Space and adventures and - oh! did I mention the TARDIS also travels in time?"

Hermione smiled. "That's a very, uh, generous offer, but I'll have to decline. In fact, I should be getting back to the house and try to repair the wall before my husband gets home."

"Husband? No matter, he can come with! Done that before, I think. Or maybe not." He frowned. "Maybe I should."

"Um, no, thank you."

"Oh, well. But wait!" He searched his pockets until he finally came up with a scrap of paper and a pen. "My number. Give me your mobile; I can fix it so that it'll work across the universe. No extra charge!"

Hermione's smile widened. "I don't have a mobile."

"Take the number anyway. If I'm on the planet, you'll be able to reach me."

Hermione thanked him and left the TARDIS, watching as the light on top started blinking and a grinding noise started up. As the TARDIS faded from view, Hermione sighed. There was lots to do before Ron got back from work, and a lot to tell him once he was home.

The clanging against his vibranium shield was constant. Steve could barely get a breath in before the next blow. Sweat dripped down the back of his neck, his mask discarded long ago to give himself some air. His shoulder and arm ached with the weight of his shield and he felt like the next blow would rip the leather straps from his forearm. He held his breath.

Then -- a gust of air behind him, not a breeze but a tornado but it streamed on either side of him, giving Steve a much needed reprieve. He let out a sigh as a small, bald boy drifted to the ground next to him.

"I got your back," the boy said, his voice somehow cheerful despite the vibe around them. Steve should know better than to ask questions. He's seen time travel, magic, a god, a robot come to life … He couldn't help himself.

"How did you do that?"

The boy looked at Steve with a twinkle in his eye. "I'm the Avatar. These are my friends." He gestured and Steve followed his finger to see four children standing a few yards away. Children. But Steve was a child who wanted to fight once and he needed the help.

"Okay," Captain America said with a nod. "Do you have a plan?"

"Stand back!" One of the girls in the group behind them shouted. It was barely a warning as she was already taking a step forward, her hands out in front of her like claws, twisting in a purposeful way. Suddenly, a wall of rock appeared before her and moved as if of its own volition towards the enemy. Somehow Steve knew she was controlling it.

"Maybe I'll take a breather," he mumbled.

"Good idea, Shield Man." Before he could even respond to this nickname, the bald boy and his friends were off into the fray, wielding weapons he didn't recognize. Maybe this was the boost they needed to win, no matter how weird it was.
