Recast characters:
Nate = chimpanzee
Chimps are known for being problem-solvers; they're smart and they learn from each other how to use tools and so on - that certainly fits the mastermind.
Sophie = cat
Sophie is the fluffiest, fanciest cat you know - a real queen among cats. She looks so cute and elegant that you almost forget she's still a predator with really sharp claws.
Eliot = rhinoceros
Eliot is the hitter; he's the tank of the group. He puts himself bodily between his team and the bad guys and uses his own body as a weapon. The first animal I thought of was a charging rhino and I think it fits perfectly.
Parker = magpie
Magpies are known thieves - they go for the shiny stuff, just like a certain human thief we all know and love. Parker is drawn to diamonds like a magpie to a shiny piece of foil. (Although I don't think you'll find foil and bottle caps in Parker's nest. *g*)
Hardison = otter
Otters are playful and highly social and they look adorable. Hardison is easily the most social member of the team and he has a lot of fun on the job using his various gadgets. He is very excitable when in full-on geek mode, and it reminded me of otters.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy = lioness
A powerful fighter and a great protector; she's going to rip anyone threatening her family apart. And like a real lioness is often overlooked for the "king of the jungle" lion, Buffy is good at blending in and doing her work without the rest of the world knowing.
Willow = owl
Owl stand for wisdom and knowledge, and Willow has both to spare. But despite that, owls are also known to be kind of stupid by people who work with owls, and Willow doesn't always make the best choices.
Spike = fox
He's the ultimate trickster; he might help, but can you ever be really sure of his motives? He also switches side depending on whatever helps him most.
Xander = hyena
What can I say? Chosen purely because of that season one episode with the hyena spirit possession which was awful but inspired many a fanfic. *g*
Dawn = hedgehog
She's cute but also kinda prickly, and when things are tough she used to do the hedgehog thing and just roll up in a ball. Thankfully she got past that, but still.

I had to think so hard on what kind of animal I wanted for Dawn, so eventually I just wrote down a bunch of character traits and picked whatever animal came to mind. *g*
