“Right here, Sehunnie. wherever you are, that’s where I’ll be. We belong together.”
Sehun is sixteen, feet dangling off the edge of the rooftop, a whole city laid out before his eyes.
He keeps his gaze ahead, but puts a palm over Jongin’s own. “Really?”
The other laces their fingers together, a tangible confirmation. “Really.”
“Even if I’m a nobody? Nothing to my name?”
Jongin turns to him then, a thumb gently brushing over the patch of skin on Sehun’s left cheek, purple and blue, but healing. “You’re you, that’s all that matters to me.”
“But you’re Kim Jongin,” Sehun emphasizes, a protest. “You have a future all planned out for you. And I’m just… this kid with an alcoholic dad who lives in a shack for a home.”
The other takes a sharp breath at his words, eyes pained. “When I grow up. When I graduate and can get a job and have my own say in things, I will take you with me. Far away from here. Take you away from that hellhole you call a home. So you won’t ever get hurt anymore.”
Sehun stares into Jongin’s eyes, sees the sincerity reflected inside those orbs, and wants to believe.
Jongin wants to save Sehun.
Sehun wants Jongin to save him.
“Two more years,” Sehun breathes out, gaze back to the city and open sky before them.
“Two more years,” Jongin agrees, a promise.
Two years is a long time.
Two years of Jongin’s father breathing down his neck, telling him to study. Telling him he must carry on the title of being a Kim. Telling him he must be worthy to take over the company someday.
Two years of, You have more things to worry about than friends, Jongin. Friends come and go. Families don’t. You want to make us proud, don’t you? I’m getting old. I won’t be able to run the company much longer. All our hopes are placed on you.
Two years of Jongin reciting apologies with a sheepish smile, saying he needs to go home as soon as possible to attend extra tutoring lessons, sorry Sehunnie, can we schedule our hanging-out another day?
Schedule. Like Jongin is so busy and Sehun needs to request for an appointment just to see him, to hang out on the roof, to get ice cream together.
To let Sehun rest his head onto Jongin’s shoulder with a palm holding his stomach, silently enduring, and Jongin will see through him, ask him to lift his shirt up, bandage the wound for him.
These days, Sehun sits in a corner of his dark room, watching as the sun slowly set through the window until his vision turns pitchblack from the lack of light.
And it’s fine. Sehun prefers that. Maybe if he can’t see, it will hurt less.
Except it only hurts more. Our eyes scramble for things, try to conjure the impossible up, when there is nothing to perceive.
Sehun doesn’t have to close his eyes to see Jongin’s distorted image in front of him, a soothing smile, soft words as he tells Sehun it will be okay, I’m here. I’ll always be here for you, Sehunnie.
He blinks and Jongin is gone.
But still, Sehun wants to believe.
“I’ll be studying abroad in America for University.”
It’s the day of graduation, and Jongin looks so dapper, so regal in his black gown and cape. There’s an awkward smile marring his handsome face, like he isn’t sure how Sehun is going to respond to this.
Sehun has long grown numb.
“I see,” he answers, trying for a smile back. He isn’t sure if he succeeded. “I wish you the best of luck, then.”
“Thank you…” The other’s hands twist together, fidgety and nervous. Sehun doesn’t see why he has any reason to be. “You know, Sehunnie… I―I still mean what I said, back then. How… How I want to take you far away from here, someday. But I need to―need to find my own path first, you know? And then… once I’ve stabilized. Once I’m secured in life and have a good job, then I’ll come back. I’ll come find you. And we will be together, again.”
Sehun doesn’t say anything back. Just blinks blankly at him.
“So will you… Will you wait for me, until then?” Jongin reaches a hand out, and widens his eyes in shock when Sehun takes a step back. Away from him.
Because Sehun wants to think there is truth and sincerity in his words, that Jongin will keep his promise, but the thing is―
The thing is, Sehun wants to believe, but he doesn’t think he can, anymore.
