So yesterday morning, I was awakened about 6 am by a loud crash and thud outside my apartment. My half-conscious mind processed it as being a fallen tree (trust me, that's something I've heard plenty), so I stumbled over to the window in the bedroom to look out into the forested nature preserve behind the building. Noticing nothing back there, I then checked the window in the bedroom, which overlooked the parking lot. There, I was greeted by a lot of branches that were much too close, and a tree trunk that was likewise in the wrong direction. Apparently, one of the trees on the embankment had fallen over onto the building, and was resting on my roof. I sleepily checked the closet to make certain there were no branches peeking through (one of the perils of being on the top floor), then called Maintenance and went back to bed.
Of course, the call itself was sort of amusing, since it goes to a message service. Me: "It's not really an emergency, but I figured that they'd want to know that there's a tree that fell on my apartment. No, it didn't break through or anything. The director should be here soon, and nothing looks broken, so it's technically no emergency, but I thought he might want to know before coming in."
As of this morning, the tree was still there, still with the trunk leaning against the roof. The three parking spaces closest to the tree were blocked off, as though to have room for a large truck or something. Meanwhile, I'm still hoping that it doesn't slip and come through my bedroom ceiling, while still being thankful that it didn't fall in a different direction and land on my car. It doesn't even appear to have scraped off shingles or anything.
I'm sort of hoping I can get the tree as free firewood, but I doubt that'll happen.
