Making something out of nothing.

After her fight with Longshot and her labor scare, Alison had begun spending a great deal more time in her music room than she had been. It was something she needed to be doing, anyway. And, it gave her some time to herself to think and sort things out. She cleared her head better when she was dumping all of her worries into music ( Read more... )

Longshot didn't mind Alison spending a lot of her time in her music room. That's why it was there. And she hadn't spent too much time in there before. It was something she needed to do. He would never begrudge her that.

So, the time she was in there while he was home, he spent pouring over the internet to find a place to get a rickshaw. Then he got the idea to ask the jonin if she knew a place. She did one better and said one of the clan husbands could make a custom one. Score!

But now, he was shifting from foot to foot outside of the closed door. He hated interrupting her in her private space, but he had this overpowering urge for a light kiss. He pranced around a little more before knocking lightly.

Then he realized the door was soundproofed like the rest of the room and tried knocking louder.

Alison frowned slightly and pressed her palm flat against the guitar strings. Her head tipped to the side as she listened. Yep, there is was again. Knocking.

She set the guitar aside and began the clumsy process of getting herself to her feet. How did women do this in their last months of pregnancy? She was only halfway and already having issues with movement.

Eventually, she managed it and went over to open the door. She smiled at Longshot. "Hey, sweetheart. C'mon in."

The door opened and suddenly he had doubts. He didn't want to encroach. He gave a nervous grin.

"You sure? I could just get the kiss I need and skip back downstairs. I don't wanna interrupt anything important." Except he had already interrupted by being there and knocking. Oops.

He still couldn't help shifting from foot to foot.

"You're not interrupting anything important. I needed a break anyway." She hooked a finger in the collar of his shirt and tugged him closer for the kiss he wanted. As distractions went, that one was pretty high up on the list.

When she drew back, she smiled and tugged lightly on his shirt again. Nudging him farther into the room.

"You can be my good luck charm so my music will cooperate."

SMOOCHIES! YAY!

The nervousness went away long enough to get a good kiss in. Good enough he wasn't paying attention to being nudged into her room farther. Until he noticed his bare toes were well past the doorway.

"It's not cooperating?" Conversation might distract him from thoughts of 'BAD MOJOWORLDER! OUT OF YOUR WIFE'S SANCTUARY!'

"Nope. The song I'm working on didn't want to be played on the piano. I'm trying to work it out on a guitar and see how that does. Although, I don't play guitar half as well as I do piano." She wrinkled her nose in annoyance. The song was outsmarting her.

"You can listen and tell me if it's any good."

"O-Okay." He didn't know how good of a music critic he could be. She could warble a long, drawn out opera aria and he'd think it was the neatest thing ever. Longshot loved everything about his wife, and it made him biased about just about everything.

He shifted around nervously and waited for Alison to direct him where to go.

"Well, you don't have to if you don't want to. I could just use a second pair of ears." She smiled and shrugged. If he wanted to leave, she wouldn't stop him from going. He always seemed nervous in the music room. Well, the few times he was in there.

"But, if you do want to, then come over and sit with me on the futon. One day I'll get a couch or some chairs in here." She chuckled and squeezed his hand before she walked back to the futon and went through the awkward motions of sitting down on something so low.

"Well, it's your room and everything. I don't wanna... mess it up being here." Mess probably wasn't the word he was looking for, but it was what he could come up with. He hesitated a moment before going over to help Alison sit down more easily.

He licked his lips nervously before settling down beside her. If she wanted him to leave, he could be gone in a flash. Except with his clothes still on.

"You won't mess anything up, sweetheart. Sometimes I want to be alone in here. But, right now I want to spend time with you."

She smiled at him for his help and gave him another light kiss. "Thank you, sweetheart. I'm gonna do my best with the guitar, but it's not my best instrument. So, sorry for any bad notes."

She settled the guitar in her lap again and started to play slowly. The song she was working on wasn't as upbeat as some of the others on her album. But, it was good -- she thought. It loosely told a story of losing so many people that the singer eventually gave up. But, then found hope again at the end.

Longshot was very, very quiet. Because he was a ninja and stuff. He paid strict attention to the song. He may be quizzed later.

He pinched his lower lip and tugged on it halfway through the song. It wasn't a happy song, but he was aware Alison did not always lead a happy life. Not even while married to him. He mentally made the example of the fight they had.

The Mojoworlder was quiet for a little bit after she finished. It had a nice ending, but he needed to put all his thoughts in order. "That song about you?"

"Mmm. Well, all of my songs have a bit of me in them. It's hard to write a song about a situation you haven't experienced and give it real feeling." She set the guitar aside and turned to face him. Her knee rested lightly against his.

"I've wanted to give up on life a time or two. But, something always pulled me back." She smiled and reached out to tuck a stray lock of his hair behind his ear. "Lots of times it was you."

"Oh. Hmm." He pressed his lips together as he thought about it. "The ending's the best. Can't go wrong with a little hope."

He blinked at her. "Me?"

About the only pulling he could think of was toward the bed. And occasionally saving her life from one villain or another. Though she usually saved his bacon sometime later.

"But, it's not your kind of song, is it?" There wasn't any accusing in her voice or upset. She was mostly curious. Her husband's music taste -- if one went by what was on his iPod -- was generally upbeat and happy. Sad songs didn't usually make the cut. Though, he did like the ending, so that was something.

"Maybe I'll leave that song alone for a while and come back to it later. Give it time to rest and see if it improves any." She shrugged and scooted closer to put her head on his shoulder. "Want to hear some of the others? I have some demo tapes from the studio."

"Mm. No. Not really. But they're your songs. It doesn't have to be mine. I'll still listen, though. The singer's really good." He gave her a wink. Since he was sitting on the futon, he could ignore the fact he was in her music room. He wasn't touching it really. This futon could absorb the Longshot germs.

"Might wanna change the chord a little over halfway. Maybe up one?" He shook his head a little and wondered for a moment where that came from. Then he almost groaned when he remembered. The first recovered memory he wished he hadn't gotten back. "Yes, your music would be very good right now. As long as I get snuggles and stuff with it? Free show?"

It almost sounded like he needed the added entertainment. To get rid of whatever he was remembering.

Alison nodded. That was fair. He didn't have to like all of her songs to support her. And she had no doubt that he would. He always held her up when she needed him.

"Really? Huh. I'll try that." She blinked at him curiously. "I didn't know you knew musical chords."

She chuckled as she leaned away from him to pull the tape player closer. The tape was still in it from her earlier listening. "You can always have snuggles. I never turn down snuggling from my favorite guy."
