Characters/Pairing: Jane, Mary, Will (Jane/Mary)

Notes: For Sappho, Plato's "tenth muse", the last of my "courting the muse" series. Yay!

Jane met Mary Stanton when she and her brothers visited Will. Her hair was as lovely as it had been the winter the Dark froze the world, long and blonde and soft, wavy but not too curly, and she'd lost a lot of her puppy fat -- and of course she'd grown up, so that even to Will she was no longer the harpy she'd once been very capable of being. And Jane was captivated.

Mary was many things Jane wasn't -- vain, for one thing, and somewhat lazy. And yet she disturbed Jane's calm, made her thoughts whirl, made her stomach fill with butterflies. At first, Jane wanted to think she just wanted to be Mary's friend. But when she started to spend more time with Mary than with Will and her brothers, and when she spent most of her time wanting to touch Mary -- brush her hair back from her face, hold her hand, kiss her... Well, it became undeniable at that point.

When Jane, Barney and Simon went home, Jane forced a promise out of Mary that she would write. Will looked on, his round face sober and unhappy -- not just because his friends were leaving, he was used to the pain of being alone, after all, but because he could see it coming: Mary would not write to Jane.

Jane knew it, too. She could only hope -- pray -- that somehow, things would come out right.

jane, will, claims, shanaqui: jane, jane/mary, mary
