A kid -- maybe 10, chocolate smudges around his mouth, wearing a t-shirt -- a perfectly ordinary-looking kid, in other words -- came up and started talking to me about the public transit. He seemed really interested, especially in the various train lines. I ate my ice cream and listened to him, tossing in occasional bits of agreement. I think he was a little lost in the mental effort of sorting through trivia. I can relate to that.
