“Ash?” the blonde looked at her girlfriend with concern. “Are you okay, hun?”
“I never thought I’d be the one who was scared,” Ashley replied, gripping Spencer’s hand tighter as they approached the school.
Spencer looked at her and noticed that her eyes were somehow fearful and alert as she looked at the groups of people making their way on campus. Spencer was reminded of Ashley’s words from that day at the beach. ‘Your family, friends…people you don’t even know are going to hate you.’ The blonde stopped, making Ashley turn to face her.
“What did I tell you last night?” Spencer asked and watched as Ashley’s face went blank, leaving the brunette only to stare endlessly into those innocent blue eyes. “I told you that I would take care of us. No one is going to hurt you or me, okay? Not my mom, not Madison Duarte, not some random person who doesn’t agree with us… okay, baby, I promise.”
“But … I want to take care of you too,” Ashley lowered her head, alarming Spencer with the words. “It’s just … I don’t think I can.”
A wide smile crept on Spencer’s face as Ashley looked up, confused at her reaction. Warm, loving arms wrapped themselves around the brunette, slowly stroking her back. Ashley found herself glancing around to see if anyone was noticing them but was distracted by Spencer’s arms tightening around her and the whispers she spoke. “I think you proved to me last night that you can take care of me. No one’s ever shown me that kind of love … ever.”
She pulled away from Ashley but still refused to let their hands stray from each other. The look in the brunette’s eyes was pure admiration, like a lost puppy that had finally found someone to love it.
“Do you need more time?” Spencer asked with an understanding tone.
“No, Spence,” Ashley smiled and moved towards Spencer. Their lips met softly, only a little more than a peck, but to both it felt like the fire left over from previous night had rekindled itself. “We’ve wasted enough time already. Let’s do this.”
Hand-in-hand, they walked among the crowd of students, never letting go.
