Helen trailed her fingertips along the edge of her desk, feeling the curve of the wood. It had been a long year, longer than most. And she felt more than qualified to make that judgment. She was still surprised at how difficult it had been, returning to the life she'd left.

Everything in Carentan had been set back. They'd learned to live without many of the more modern conveniences they'd come to rely on in their daily lives, and coming home, everything seemed complicated. Of course, it hardly helped that they had spent so much of their time there desperately searching for a way to destroy thousands of lives, undo decades of history.

It didn't matter if it was history that should have never been made. Someone had been responsible. And until they could be held accountable for their actions, she would shoulder the blame. She would grieve for the lives lost. She and Will were the only ones left who could.

Absently rubbing her temple, she straightened in her seat, pushing back the exhaustion that seemed so intent on overwhelming her. There was work to be done.
