Dinner on the Strip for ph_hard_candy

Peter had been in Vegas for two days, and Linderman had been keeping him busy.  Which of course was the whole reason that Arthur sent him out, Linderman was a business partner after all and occasionally he needed a reliable asset like Peter.  But he never went to Vegas without having a little fun, and a little usually turned into a lot more.  If ( Read more... )

Candy had come almost directly from work; she kept strange hours. Every day was theoretically supposed to start at eight and end at five, but if something came up then something happened. She hadn't even had time to change, so she met him in her work wardrobe -- low-heeled shoes, black pants, and a black long-sleeve shirt with a cutout that gave a decent view of her collarbone and the tops of her breasts. Appealing, but not slutty. She wasn't like that.

"Peter," she said with a smile as she came to sit down across from him. "Good to finally meet you."

Peter smiled as he saw her and when she sat down across from him. She looked good; less like any security supervisor that he knew. Though most of them were men--usually retired cops, and there was usually a reason for their retirement too. That of course, was in New York and not in Vegas where hotel and casino security was an art not just a job.

"Candy. The pleasure is all mine," he said with a small smile. Peter himself was wearing a suit, though his jacket was hanging on the back of his chair, and he had a light blue shirt and a dark red tie. "Just get off of work?"

"Sadly, yes. Busy night," she said with a laugh. "Rick - that's my partner, Rick Butler - is wrapping things up for me, though. So how are you enjoying Vegas so far?" she asked, settling in, leaning in a little. She always liked to hear what other people were thinking; people interested her immensely.

"That was nice of him," he said, smiling again. "I am enjoying myself, though this is the first time off that I've had. There's been a lot to do. It's also not the first time I've been here.. work sends me out here periodically."

Peter looked up and motioned one of the waiters over. "Do you want anything to drink, Candy? I didn't want to order for you, I didn't know what you like. Anything you want."

"We're a team, we get each other's backs." Candy shrugged as if it was nothing; to them it wasn't. She would step up for Rick, or Chris, or Jules -- and to an extent even Matt or Mike, though they were technically her bosses -- and they would do the same for her. Came with working with each other for so long and so well.

But she smiled and stretched out. "I was thinking a good bottle of wine, any particular recommendation?"

"I've got something in mind," he said and gave an order to the waiter for a red wine. Then he looked back at her. "My father has a thing for wines, he's sort of an amateur wine snob. I grew up hearing him talk all about it."

He leaned back further into his chair and smiled again. "How long have you been working there? You sound like you know each other pretty well."

"Eight years," she said. "And we do, yeah. Most of us have been there for a few years now. Rick was hired two years after me. Matt's the newest one, he just started at the beginning of the year."

And she smiled at him, that winning smile. "What about you? How's your work going?"

"That's a pretty good team though," he said in approval. "Work is.. well, it's work. Mr. Linderman has a lot he needs me to do, and then my brother gave me this ridiculous request before I left. I'm still trying to decide if I want to go through with it or not."

"What, did he ask you to bring him back a hooker?" Candy said glibly. "You'd be surprised, with a nickname like Candy, how many hooker or stripper jokes I get."

He shook his head. "No, it's not.. I would imagine you do. Your parents weren't doing you any favors with that kind of name," he said with an amused smile.

"Well, my full name is Candace," she explained. "I just go by Candy. I like it better." She smiled back at him; she was enjoying this time with him. It wasn't often that she got honest male attention, most of it was from drunk people. So to have both Jack and Peter displaying interest in her, she was actually a little bit giddy.

The waiter came back with the wine and poured a glass for both of them, and took their orders when they were ready before he disappeared again. Peter picked up his glass and smelled it first appreciatively before he took a sip. "I think I like Candy better than Candace too. Have you always lived in Vegas?"

"Born and raised," she said with a little nod. "I like it here. It has character, you know? It's not just a city. It has a life of its own. Granted, some of that involves crazy drunk people and hookers, but it pops. The nightlife is amazing, and there are some very good people out here, real characters and really stand up people." She nursed her wine politely. "And it's never boring."

(OOC: No worries, it's not as if it's crucial to the plot!)

"Definitely not boring," he said with a small smile. "I agree with you. I think all big cities with any worth to them have personality. Not the sort of tourist thing that people come here to do, but the secrets that only the natives know."

"Exactly. I never get tired of being here. I never know what any day is going to bring but I know I'll always have a story." She smiled. "I mean, I certainly didn't know I was going to meet you, so that was a very pleasant surprise!"

He laughed softly and then sipped his wine again. "That's true. That sort of thing happens more often than usual here it seems. There are plenty of surprises every time I come out here."
