Someone explain this to me?
How is writing fanfic similar to stealing since most of us use disclaimers that the characters and etc do not belong to us? And even for those who don't, it's common knowledge that they do not.
Seriously? How does us fanfic writers only claiming the words that we spent hours on as ours the same thing as someone going about and claiming our words as their own?
When I write a fic, I'm not claiming the characters as my own, the universe and settings, no. The only thing I'm claiming as my own is my words and my damn plot. Those are mine.
Hell, Fandom twists and tears at the characters so much half the time they're only the same in name because being here, in this medium we have options that the writers in the mainstream do not.
Obviously, I do not enjoy being compared to a thief and a (under investigation) plagiarist.
