"Don't tread on me" 311 review, so if u dont give a shit about 311 dont read it
(its long)

i know i said id never post again and blah blah blah bullshit, but i feel compelled to voice my opinion so the few 311 fans on LV can hear what i have to say and respond to me so i know what they think as well

positives: 311 has mastered their ballad, either to our like or dislike, they can write some original, groovy and musical ballads, and between evolver and DTOM the ballads are the best songs and i love them. another positive is SA's learning to sing, finally.... hmmmm more positives.... they're still 311, and all the talent's still there, tim still rips the perfect solo, p-nut grooves the perfect bass line, chad still jams the perfect 311 beat, nick is amazingly nick, in my opinion the perfect vocalist and then SA.......well, he looks cute dancing around on stage when they perform. but all of that is to be expected and sadly enough all that talent doesnt automatically make a good album

negatives: i wont say all i could say and rip this album completely apart, but ill focus on the main issues that drop the level of this album from 311 awesome to disappointing. first off is that the album is obviously way to soft, but i could live with that if the dept and quality of the songs were close to level at which they use to write at. Im not saying in '94 they were writing about deep and insightful shit, but the quality of those older songs were immeasurable and uncandidly original, even compared to songs on an album previously they were extremely original. also any time on this album that they tried to crank it up on a song it just didnt come out right, even evolver had a few songs that where up on energy levels and were decent, Reconsider Everything as an example. Also I dont think i head one song where they raped to, which can also be found on a few songs on evolver. lastly the songs lack the originality they use to have, now i know if ur reading this you're probably thinking "311's one of the most original bands on the market." Well ur right but when u listen to the last two albums they've put out the limits they have when it comes to writing contrasting songs has come to a tight close. All the ballads have very similar structure, the grooves have the same tim mahoney offbeats and the songs just come across sounding way to similar for my taste.

if u endured to read all of that ur prb thinking to yourself how 311 could possibly be my favorite band, but keep in mind that the review is heavily biased as im comparing it to all the previous 311 albums which, when it comes down to it, is a very difficult biased to be under. I still like the album, and it will grow on me much as evolver did, but i just had to be honest and put down into text my thoughts after hearing 311's newest work. any feedback on this will be appreciated as i want to know as many people's opinions to help broaden mine, many thanks
