So I'm back from Grandfather's funeral, and he was such an amazing man. He had a wife of 49 years, 6 children, and 15 grandchildren. Yeah, we're a big family, and we all knew how much he loved us and would do anything to provide the world for us. However, during these past few days, I heard stories about them that not only brought tears to my eyes but pride in my heart. For example, this one woman at work just mentioned to him in casual conversation that she had been having trouble finding some sheet music for the piano, and days later it was on her desk from him. There was another time when a woman was worried about the weather and commuting by bus so he got her a train ticket to where he was going and then drove her to her car that was in a few towns over. Also, one of his co-workers had a very sick daughter and after a week of hearing about her he donated a generous sum of money to the family. It was things like that that just made me realize how great of a man he was, not just to our family but to others.
Now I'm back at school. The whole funeral experience was almost surreal... I didn't really grasp that he was really gone. But now, the best thing I can do for him is keep working hard at school. A lot of my tuition is out of his money, and one of the quotes of his I heard the other day was him saying "I don't invest in stocks, I invest in education."
Grandfather, thank you for your gift of my education. I owe you so much. With much love, Margaret
