Notes:
-I might need to play with the format a bit. What I hope to do (as you can see above) is to entry my date, time and what I read, and then I'll write thoughts down here in the notes and thoughts section. You will find out that I spend a lot of my reading time online - mostly skimming over articles and news stories of interest. I will try to remember to write down some of the headlines of the articles that I read, but it is kind of hard to keep track.
Thoughts for this week:
-Facebook's IPO is hot news this week (so was President Obama's support of gay marriage announcement - I think it was the same week). I was interested to read the news about Eduardo Saverin because I wondered about him when I saw the movie, The Social Network. His name, Eduardo Saverin, suggested to me that he wasn't Caucasian, and I wondered if he was Hispanic. Seeing the actual Eduardo Saverin's photo online in the news helped, and the article said he was "Brazilian-born." Despite Saverin's spokesperson said that the action was not to invade taxes, they explained (and I'm not quoting this so I might explain it wrong) that United States put too much [strain? taxes? restrictions?] on foreign investments so that is what prompt the move. Of course I think that is a bunch of bull and no matter how nice they want to spin it, it is of course because it is too costly to remain a rich U.S. citizen so they had to give it up.
-I don't watch desperate housewives but I was (or am) a fan of some of the actresses on that show. Teri Hatcher, of course, was my high school idol because she was Lois Lane in Lois and clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I kind of grew a fondness for Felicity Hoffman because of her husband William Macy, an actor I like (the two of them were so cute when they presented at the golden globe). Interestingly, from this article I read I discovered a blog created by Felicity Hoffman -
http://whattheflicka.com/ The blog is written for wives and moms from other wives and moms, of course, some of the bloggers being celebrity wives and moms. The blog website says "A haven for moms, sisters, women or just about anyone who could use a little pick me up, a little help, or a little company on the road trip of life."
-Harry Potter
It is difficult to write about this, not because it is Harry Potter but because of what happened over the weekend. To clarify, I have already read all 7 harry potter books (re-read
them several times actually, and saw all the movies). Although this assignment never specifies, I assume that the point of PRABE is to read something I have not read before, not re-read all my favorite books (although I have lots of those if that DO qualify the assignment). However, this Saturday I was reading Harry Potter to my husband, who hadn't read all 7 books. He's read bits and pieces here and there, mostly prompted by my urging. I enjoy it when he read aloud to me, and Saturday I choose to read chapter 2 of Deathly Hallows to him. We received news Saturday afternoon that a long time close family friend passed away due to cancer. The news was upsetting and a bit of a shock. We knew he had turned worse. In fact, we had made plans to visit him that day, and called his house but there was no answer, so we didn't go and didn't get to say goodbye in person. His wife called Saturday and said he died late Friday night. It was sad, but I remind myself he is not in pain anymore, and where he is now he is in good hands, and probably watching over us. The news is particularly upsetting to my husband because his dad passed away 11 years ago, also because of cancer, and about around the same time of the year (his was in April).
I feel I am not good with words, and I feel that way especially when faced with a friend who lost someone. Luckily, I do understand my husband, and I knew that he needed hugs and his hand held. But I also wanted to say something to make him feel better, and I have always felt that no one really says it better than J.K. Rowling.
Before I read the chapter to Aaron, I explained to him why. I remember Rowling once said that the harry potter books are about death. She started writing when her mother passed away and that is how harry was formed, orphaned. Confronting death, or overcoming death, is a major theme throughout the books, and of course, especially in the seventh one. I took Deathly Hallows with me back home to Taiwan for three months when my father was ill and passed away. One of my favorite lines from the book is in Prisoner of Azkanban, when Dumbledore told harry that our loved ones are never really gone, and that they live within us, especially when we need them the most. That was why I choose to read chapter 2, In Memoriam, of Deathly Hallows to my husband Saturday.
