Sexual Orientation: Probably heterosexual, although it's probably too early to tell, anyway; with his current interest in women (meaning: none), or sexuality, for that matter, he might as well be asexual out of laziness. Let us assume he is a late bloomer, for now.
Personality/Canon facts: Judging from first impression, Shikamaru appears to be one of the most ordinary shinobi around. You could go as far as to calling him boring, a slowpoke. He isn't really interested in a lot of things, least of which being work. He might be the laziest guy you could come around in these premises - anything and everything which could be a remote trouble is being bemoaned by him if he's forced to be involved. Most of the time, however, Shikamaru does a good job escaping trouble in the first place. Superiors, paperwork, housework, and just any interaction with troublesome women shall and will be avoided. Don't try to start an argument with him, he'll just turn his back and maybe wave his hand goodbye before leaving. He does need that affirmation that he has ended up being right, or to rub it in someone's face. If he were allowed to have his way, he wold kick back and watch the clouds all day. But his lack of ambition has compensation: his genius mind.
Shikamaru has been attributed an IQ of over 200. He is skilled in making quick judgment of the situation and developing strategies in the most pressed situations, which is, despite the fact that he was not as physically strong or capable as his fellow genin, the reason that he was the first to advance to chuunin level. Time pressure leaves him unimpressed. He is bound to beat most people in a match of chess or shogi, go and any other tactical board game. In actual combat, his specialty are feints, as he is able to predict and and precalculate an immense lot of steps until his actual attack, laying out a lot of bluffs. Rarely will he miss out on subtleties of a situation; however it's an entirely different matter whether he will choose to react or comment. He does not care to display his intellect most of the time and does not care if people assume that he is a complete idiot.
Shikamaru is fairly mature, though does not sport the slightest interest in women. In his eyes, they are just the plain epitomes of troublesome, his best and foremost example being his own mother. He tends to wonder and ask his father why he has married the dragon at all. His answer, claiming even the roughest woman would be tender to the man she loves, is one of the few things his son fails to comprehend.
When it comes to arguments of any sort, count Shikamaru out. If things get too ridiculous in his eyes, he'll stop answering. If you're being childish, you should be grateful if he even bothers enlightening you by telling you so. Still he isn't unpleasant company. If you need a laid-back, down-to-earth advice, he might just be perfect for that. If it is so required, he might just step up and fight injustice like any other fairly brave shinobi. After nearly losing every member of his chuunin team and still failing an important mission to rescue Sasuke-in-a-barrel, Shikamaru makes the decision that he will become stronger for his teammates so that he doesn't have to risk them again. He's a grounded person and very loyal to his house and friends, of which he hasn't got many, but close ones.
Some people might just be worth the trouble.
