for a movie which in previews tried to set itself up as one where there could potentially be an underlying question of reality versus self-induced fantasy, the movie itself turned out to be much more straightforward than i thought it would be.
overall i think the movie was a failure. it started with a lot of great potential and ended up going into a place that was very sensible - i.e. vanilla. and once it went vanilla, no sense of large sweeping scenery of exotic places or self-affirming character moments for Ben Stiller could prevent me from feeling bored.
that said, i didn't hate the movie. predictability doesn't always mean bad if it's done the right way, and there were a couple of key scenes and also a sensibility of the movie that kept me mildly entertained. it just didn't stick out as being a particularly memorable movie, it's that painting you see amongst all of the other ones and say, "oh, that's nice" before you go visit the Picasso gallery or the Dali gallery.
fails the bechdel test. no two female characters actually talk to each other for over 30 seconds.
