There's a Whole Foods in the Garden District. I don't go in there to shop very often (maybe once or twice a year) because it's clear across town and i have a decent grocery within walking distance of where i live, but i do have to go in there every now and again because it's the only place that sells the hair texturizer i use which i'm fairly

The Whole Foods in Portland, Maine is a little like that, even though it's really in a poorer part of town. Portland is very mixed - it can be good at one end of the street, bad at the other or on the other side of the block - but the Whole Foods is in the middle of a more industrial/low income area that is a bit nerve-wracking to walk through at night. Yet, of course, everyone who's shopping there looks pretty well-fed and groomed.

I don't think Whole Foods is a great shopping experience. I always feel like it is chaotic and trafficky. The one near my work is full of older people during lunchtime and they just about run you over. The one near my house is a little bigger, and people with their babies practically run me over to get to the yogurt/milk section. It's pretty fucked up.
I don't feel like people are necessarily more snobby there, but they certainly feel superior in some way because they are eating overpriced organics or whatever. All the staff has always been pleasant and nice to me, enough that it makes me consider working there if I was ever desperate enough to need a part time, retail job.
OH and it has this SMELL to it that I can't identify and I really don't like. Kinda like cardboard and cheese maybe? It's kinda yucky.

I never got that vibe from the Whole Foods in Redmond or Bellevue. I went in there occassionally; not to shop, but just for lunch or dinner, because the hot food and deli stuff is all incredibly delicious. I don't think it's made me smug, though. I still enjoy McDonalds just as much as always.

I've never been in one, but one of the local radio stations here did a spoof commercial a while back for "A-Hole Foods".

I spent $120 at Whole Foods this morning and was walking around thinking about how much I hate this place. $3.99 for a can of chili? Fuck you. On the bright side, I had a really cute hipster cashier help me.
