Patrick's lungs are heaving and rough, his fingers bruising from the harsh way he has been gripping the frets of his guitar.
He knows it's been a good show, a great show, the best he's ever played, life seeping into every harsh harmony. But now he's just so tired and his legs wobble harshly and the microphone stand he has been leaning against topples sideways.
Pete can't catch him in time, but he limps over to Patrick's fallen form and pulls him close. He doesn't tell him everything will be okay, because the only way that the world could ever be okay again is if Patrick could continue, even for just another day.
Instead he simply pulls him close and whispers that he's here for however long that can still be true.
Patrick closes his eyes to the crowd's echoic screaming of his name and Pete Wentz pressed so firmly against him that they are almost one.
He thinks, if nothing else, this moment was worth it all.
(Their record goes platinum. The unchanging world is a sucker for tragedy.)
