you meet her where you never meant to. her eyes are resigned - she knows she has to say something, but only because of your shared history, and it won't be much. she'll give as little as possible away, hold everything else back behind the mask of skin and lips and eyes she calls a face.

'how are you?' she asks.
you smile, just at your mouth. you knew her voice would fall on you like that, numb and flat as unused earth.
'i don't know,' you say. 'i can't figure it out. i'm alive.'
she shakes her head sadly like you just made a mistake. you don't agree, but there's nothing you can do about it now.
'i have to go,' she says.
you watch as she does.

and you're left with an empty room.
and you're left with a blank wall.
and you're left with your own thoughts
to think and think and think about it all.
